I took my rifle out to the range again today and put 60 rounds through it (bringing me up to 500rds with everything from Wolf to PPU Match without any problems and no cleaning or lubing)
I was testing out some new ammo (PPU 69gr Match) and it shot about 1MOA at 50yds so I took it out to the 200 yard line and shot a 10 shot “group”. Seven of the shots weren’t too bad coming in right at 2MOA but once you add in the eighth shot it goes out to 2.5 and by the tenth I’m at 3.5. The “group” extended to the right starting with three shots in the 1.5MOA bull.
The setup was a BCM carbine with EOTech 512 and PPU 69gr Match ammo. Is this even close to an acceptable group at this distance with this rifle? I would think that while shooting quality ammo I should be able to keep it in 2MOA so does anyone have any tips to help me out on the 200 yards and out targets?
Does it have a free float rail or standard handguards?
To take some of the human error out of the equation, get a decent sandbag rest and place the gun in the rest as close as you can to the reciever. You can place the butt of the gun in a small bag as well. Take your time, squeezing the trigger while concentrating on the sight.
assuming you got the basics down (breathing, cheekweld, sight picture, etc…) the single biggest variable affecting POI is how consistent you hold the rifle. try to get it exactly the same every time.
also, it makes a difference how you are resting the rifle. is the barrel free-floated?
Slow down, take your time. Use a sandbag, bi-pod or very tight sling. Use BRASS (Breath (Let half out or go to respiratory pause), Relax, Aim, Slack (Take up the slack in the trigger), Squeeze (Until the trigger breaks)). If it takes longer than 20 seconds or if your vision starts blurring, sights or dot starts to wobble, don’t take the shot, and start the process all over again.
