Any reason why we do not see Gyro Jet style Ammunition?

No specifically an AR, but

Well, in general a 55 grain .224 bullet,
If you are willing to go with a long barrel, huge capacity long action brass, accept accelerated chamber erosion, bore wear, and reduced brass life,
Maybe 4000 fps.

Fastest common round is generally accepted as the .220 swift that can push 50 grain .224 bullets over 4000 fps.

There are other newer rounds (like a .300 Ultra Mag pushing a light .30 bullet) that approach this speed, but for all practical uses consider 4100 fps a limit.

If I’m not mistaken the upper theoretical limit is bounded by the gas expansion speed. There’s just no way to push the bullet faster than the gas can expand with standard cartridges.

Oddly enough, theoretically I think you could make a muzzle loader that would shoot faster than a modern weapon. Separate the projectile and the powder and put a converging diverging nozzle in between them. Properly designed the nozzle would cause the gas speed to increase beyond what it is initially by converting thermal energy into kinetic energy…

OK, so now we are talking about a rocket assisted projectile fired from a traditional case.

First problem is they round would probably arrive at it’s destination prior to the rockets in the projectile doing anything meaningful beyond changing trajectory.

Second, propellant gases and powder residue will probably clog those jet ports in a way that will make every round fired completely inconsistent with the last round.

Third, the solid rocket fuel will weigh less than a metallic core and the terminal ballistics would probably be dismal at best even if the damn thing went straight.

Fourth, this would probably fall under some “explosive projectile / exploding bullet” category.

Not really. I want a flying car, but I’d hate to see all the dipshits on I-95 try to get their flying car to their destination. They can’t even put their phone down.

I think of all the “bubba tards” doing stupid shit on youtube with their Taurus Judge, do I really want them to have a laser pistol? Do we really want to read “Man Has Accidental Discharge With Plasma Pistol and Destroys His Genitals.”

By the mid 1970s things were pretty high tech if you knew what you were buying and how to use it. My father could put his rifle on a rest and chew a dime size hole at 100 yards for hours on end. That is your laser gun.

I think we’ll have mini maverick missiles controlled by our smartphones (think POV drones) before anything like this.

Light it off, burns to a couple miles of altitude, fly it into an unsuspecting prairie dog over the horizon.

Didn’t we the USA design and come close to developing a low orbit missile in the 1960s that utilized exploding hydrogen mini bombs to propel itself forward while simultaneously irradiating the earth below and killing everyone in its path? Or something like that?

Pffffffff

Rocket propelled bullets are child’s play.

Then start inventing something better. Or get high as **** and watch star trek until you actually believe you are Picard.

That was an idea that I had…Any idea what kind of speed that would produce?

Yeah if those every become a thing we all know “some people” will not be allowed to buy them…

Sad thing that the morons of society have to regulated the future away in the name of “protecting the lowest common denominator”.

Yes. Because that means he will be a warning to others and maybe, just maybe his genes will not be allowed to continue.

I know but I want a real plasma rifle, or a real Rail Gun, or hell at least some newly made machine guns.

I wish.

Light it off, burns to a couple miles of altitude, fly it into an unsuspecting prairie dog over the horizon.

Or a beaver dam, or African Beehive.

Project Orion? Well it would have only led to about 10 more deaths from Cancer world wide. Which would have been a total trade off.

Would could have cities on the moon, space stations the size of cities in deep space and have Mars be a 2nd Earth (at only the cost of 5 Trillion, 1/5 the cost of the "war on poverty) but no we had to give up our destiny among the stars in order to fund dysgenic breeding habits of the lowest common denominators because the leftist needed to breed or import a voter base.

Pffffffff

I do remember using an Estes Rocket in a tube, sort of like a bazooka. Fun times.

Well I think a rail gun that is powered by a Micro Thorium Reactor would be cool but you know the Feds would not let it get pass the drawing board.

No clue really. Not even 100% positive it will work. After the nozzle you get a pressure drop and a constant mass flow and I don’t know what effect that would have on a projectile.

If it does produce effective force on the projectile, then it could be very very fast. Fluid velocity post nozzle basically depends on the pressure differential between the chamber and ambient.

Shit…you figure it out on the whiteboard, and they’ll pay for it…

Its not that hard to be honest. The cost alone would be other worldly.

still lower than a conventional cartridge.

We keep giving you the answer, you keep ignoring them.

This whole conversation has been beaten to death and is now getting stupid.

would not work, thrust has to be higher than the rate to increase velocity.

Rate for a 55g is 3,500 fps-4,000fps

The fastest they were able to propel a .49 is 1451.37 fps

i think were talking about 2 different things. see thenidea i posted earlier

still would not work, .45 muzzle loader velocity is around 2250.

highest achievable thrust and fps was 1451 from a GyroJet. It would have to ignite 150 yards downrange to maintain a velocity of 1451.

I think idea of GyroJet might came back, when humanity will be in need for tools to effectively kill each other in microgravity. Unless we will have Direct Energy Weapons by this time.

I understand traditional muzzle loader velocity is low. In standard firearm design you’re limited by the expansion rate of the combusting propellant.

The introduction of a converging/diverging nozzle between the propellant and projectile has the possibility of removing that limit due to compressibility effects. Namely the fact that compressible flows accelerate as they expand.

In rockets for example, on the low end, the exhaust gas velocity from a C/D nozzle is typically between 6,800 and 10,500 fps.

Similar principles are used in light gas guns that accelerate projectiles up to hypervelocity ranges for impact research.

For Christ’s sake,
What is he not getting.

At 4000 fps we are already into chamber/bore/barrel life issues.

If you add velocity in the barrel that worsens, even if a meaningful amount of thrust could be added by a propellant in the projectile.

Ignition for added thrust after leaving the barrel is still limited by projectile volume.
With a host of trajectory and accuracy issues.
And except for extreme range projectile would already be on target.

It is like trying to explain to a Bernie fan that those glorious pools of other people’s money is not big enough to cover what he wants to do.
