Well, after my family’s affairs in WA are wrapped up I’m looking at trying to move back with the remainder of my living relatives in NE Indiana. Thinking mostly I-90, but detours around Minnesota and Illinois so I don’t have to lock up my CCW in the trunk.
Questions:
- Any Must-Sees to recommend? I’m a plane nut and a dino nut, and have some railroad museums listed already. Some of this is going to be trying to see places that were perennials when Grandpa and I made this drive to visit the rels every couple years like Lincoln’s 10,000 Silver Dollar and Wall Drug, but most of the favorite mom-n-pops like 4-B’s in Kalispell now only exist as memories. Of course Mount Rushmore since it’s right out of Wall, and I need to stop a bit west of Wall to check Ellsworth AFB’s museum B-52 off my list. Little Bighorn is BTDT.
- Particular spots to avoid? In the early 2000s when we were visiting a friend of Mom’s who’d moved to the tiny town of Libby, MT he’d described a couple of the local Indian reservations as “you do not stop even if you are out of gas” kind of places.
- Any advice on truck stops and their rewards programs? While I very much prefer localvoring with mom-n-pops, my grossed-out Equinox with 3500# of trailer and cargo isn’t gonna be the easiest on gas so I should probably look for places where I’ll get a kickback, the bigger the better, to make my gas-and-meal stops.
