Any idea what could have caused this (Bullet Discoloration)

OK- Here are the new pics
:stop:Point Taken about Pic, so no more piling on. I thought it was good enough, but apparently not, so I will UPDATE it ASAP.
Last week I came home from shooting, and left the gun loaded. Today when I was cleaning the gun the bullet on the right was the one that came out of the chamber. The one on the left was one of the ones in the mag. 9mm Federal HST.

45 Federal HST from another gun shot the same day all looked brand new. Same lube used on all my guns.

Has any one seen this? Any ideas what could have caused this? It must have been a reaction to the lube/carbon, but I have never seen one discolor like this so quickly.

It’s not like tar, it’s more like the finish is removed/discolored??? Looks like a magic marker, but its NOT.

Did you look at the picture you posted? You’ll get a ton more feedback with a picture that is actually in focus and properly exposed. I realize it is only a phone picture, but dang…try a little bit harder.

ETA: Not trying to be a jerk, so don’t take it that way.

looks like bullet sealant. I pulled a 9mm gold dot once and it had a sealant that looked like tar.

This. I’ll be a jerk. How the hell do you expect people to give you an accurate answer?

Really? I didn’t know that Gold Dot had sealed case mouths.

Come on guys who requested better pics, Brand new pics, but still no ideas???

If it is sealant, any ideas what could have caused it? Does Federal and Speer use sealer on their HST and Gold Dot Line? Also do you know if they seal their primers as well?

It looks like copper plating just flaked off.

There is no copper plating on Gold Dot bullets. They’re electro chemically bonded. It’s either residual chemical from the bonding, Sealant, or some combo of both.

what does it feel like when you run your finger over it? does it have a detectable thickness? can you scratch it off with your fingernail?

The 147gr and 124gr 9mm that I pulled both had a black “tar” on the base of the bullet. I thought it might be sealant, since I don’t really know what it was.

Could it maybe be just chambering a new round in a hot gun and letting it sit? I’ve never noticed anything like what I mentioned but I let my guns cool before going back to carry mode.

That’s definitely tar sealant.

It looks like it did seep out from the case, and it can be removed with very fine sand paper. You can’t feel it though, looks just like a dam magic maker.

I have chambered other rounds without letting the barrel cool and have never seen this issue,(rifle and pistol) maybe those rounds had no sealant though. Not a bad idea if time allows. I am going to see if goes bang, DO NOT want it in my mag.

It actually could be magic marker. Ammo makers when setting up dies will mark bullets
to make sure things are copacetic. I see magic marker on pulls all the time.

Did you happen to notice it when filling the mag?

1 does the gun still function and shoot accurate.
2 is the ammo fairly new and not old as hell, I’m no genius but I know different metals under the stresses of being chambered and exposed to heat only need time before “something” may occur.

Buy more ammo and shoot it. If the problem is persistent the a good cleaning and a smitty may be in your future.

This is not sticky at all, and can’t be felt with my finger. But if it is sealant, any ideas as to what caused it to leak out? I wouldn’t think I ran the little pistol so much the barrel was so hot it melted. Is it possible the lube somehow got in-between the case and bullet?

I originally thought the lube and carbon stained the bullet. Upon closer inspection the black marks are somewhat regular, resembles the rifling?? BUT Who the hell knows.

I hoped some one else has seen this. In any case, I just hate Shit, I can’t explain…
