Hello All I’m kind of new to this forum and was wondering if there are many owners of the PT1911? I have had one since the first of the year. I have 500 rds through it with no problems so far. The pistol is very accurate as long as I do my part correctly. I’m quite pleased with my purchase.
No. I don’t think you will find many “fans” of the Taurus pistol here.
Welcome aboard anyway and enjoy your pistol.
i think once you put more rounds through it, you might start to see some problems. if yours is from the first run, and you’ve had zero problems i am truly amazed. but then again, i had a old kimber that was a thousand dollar paper weight until sent back to the factory, so you might have a reliable gun. Taurus doesnt have a great track record for any of their guns, so you wont find a lot of love for that company around here. as long as it keeps going boom, have fun and enjoy. just dont trust your life on it.
I am involved with training members of West Point Military Academy and they were given a few of the Taurus pistols by the US president of the company which is a West Point Grad. Non of the pistols made it through the school. I have seen even more of them in normal training at TDI and almost all have broken. Like all companies you may get a good one but this series of 1911’s are very poor.

Not a fan at all here.
Your most likely not going to find many fans of Taurus here.
As a long time 1911 fan, they are a fickle beast and typically to get a “decent one” you will need to spend around $1,400 and should reastically be looking at something in the $2k-$3k range for one that will take a lot of abuse and keep on running.
If you never attend training classes with it and or shoot it a lot, it will most likely serve your needs very well.
Welcome to M4C.

How much time was put on them? What “breakages” occured? If you don’t mind me asking.
Are you saying that with all companies, I might have gotten a good Colt, or maybe my Glock 21’s are good? I think you meant to say with some companies, or all companies mess up from time to time.
I am a proud fan of my PT 1911. So is my son, of his. My daughters will be proud of theirs soon, as well (one year to graduation). BUT, I am a proud fan of all of my various makes of guns, even my Astras.
ALL companies let a bad gun out the doors from time to time. What separates the good from the bad is the frequency that this occurs… This is especially true with 1911’s.
Take a look through this thread…
You make a valid point. I wish I could actually look at and shoot all these pistols (the PT’s) that are malfunctioning. I am not hung up on Taurus, but no one can be as lucky as I am and never have problems with as many Tauruses as I own. If it were not true, I would not say it. Honestly, I never have any problems with any make of hand gun or rifle I own, except my MPA kept breaking the hex-head recessed bolts and my Mav. 88’s forearms broke. Oh. and my Rem. 700 300 Win. mag’s mag latch broke. All easy repairs.
Lots of good and bad stuff here, and it is all good! Something that did catch my eye out of everything I read through was the PT is a 1911 that is best left alone (the poster’s opinion). Aside from doing a nice bevel job, I definitely agree. If you want to do modifications and personalize, a Colt or Springfield, in my opinion, would be a better choice. The Taurus is made to do what it does as it is.
Not a fan here. My PERSONAL experience with one was that the frame, barrel and slide fit were good but they took a lot of shortcuts on the small parts, very low quality. Trigger pull was awful.
The trigger pull on both of the ones in my home are wonderful. I can’t get them to stack, but it may be the lube I use on them.
Taurus manufactures all of their parts.
Posted about it before here. Mine was a total POS. Didn’t have a single redeeming quality.
Trigger pull was okay, but nothing great. 'Course, didn’t matter much since the thing had constant failures to feed and extract. I’m glad it’s gone.
So not a fan.
Dang dude, I remember that from before. I wish you could check out the ones I have. It may not change your mind about the PT, but it might sweeten some of the bitter after taste.
I hate hearing about someone having a bad experience with a handgun. Damn things cost enough as it is and then turn around and give you grief. I am waiting on a response from Taurus in regard to some questions I am asking them about their QC. They have answered two letters from me already, so hopefully, I will get this response back soon. One question to them that I am really curious about is the seemingly lack of repairs on guns sent in and “finding no issues”. Are they spending enough time checking these guns out or are they shooting a mag or two and sending them back. Also, do they test fire with one brand of ammo, and is it something you and I can buy at the local gun shop or even WM.
Pros:
I got one when they first came out. It had the best out-of-the-box trigger on any of the 1911 pistols I’ve owned. It shot as well as I am capable. Over 5,000 rounds or so, it proved to be extremely reliable. I had no parts failures. It would only jam up when it was very dirty.
Cons:
Mine came out of the factory with a defective barrel. Their QC is notoriously bad and so is their customer service. I waited two months to get the gun back after I sent it to them for a new barrel. The finish was the worst on any pistol I’ve ever owned. I also no longer own it, which means that in the long run, it still didn’t make the cut.
I don’t agree in any way shape or form that you have to spend more than $1,000 to have a good, reliable 1911. I wouldn’t buy another Taurus, though. I feel I got very lucky.
Trade it in for an M&P45 mid size. Welcome to M4C…it can be a cold slap in the face with true knowledge to some…
This. And spend a couple of bucks on some Apex parts, and be very well set up.
Or, you could just order it from Grant, and he’ll even install the parts for you. Such a deal. ![]()
