I almost made progress on my first AR build, almost. I have a Stag lower, DD lpk on the way, ACS stock, Magpul rear sight, etc…about the only thing left is an upper and bcg.
Well, I finally saved up enough cash for that shiny new BCM middy that I’ve been wanting when it happened…
A Norinco 56s came walking into my life, at just the right price (for me anyway).
It’s a bit rough on the outside and the stock looks buggered, but it has a really clean and bright bore. I’m guessing it was left sitting somewhere damp for a long period of time, iunno. Seems serviceable enough. Also, sorry about the crappy cellphone pics.
I believe I have a good general knowledge about the platform, but is there anything in particular I should know about the 56s?
I am sure someone with more knowledge of the AK than I will come along. having said that here is a thought. Keep the original furniture and consider replacing it with something else for use. Also, if you clean a degrease the receiver and barrel good you could probably paint it with Brownells Aluma-Hyde II in black which would give it good protection and make it look nice again.
Receiver looks like hell, like someone did a half-ass job of stripping bluing off of it.
Take the whole thing down, degrease it, and Alumahyde II that bastard. I prefer to bake AH II (4.5-5 hours in the oven at 180-200F and it’s good to go–no waiting two-three weeks and the finish is tougher) instead of air-drying it.
I had some blue lying around so I hit it with that for the time being. I will definitely check on some Aluma-Hyde II as well as getting some replacement furniture.
Haha, I know right. I’m guessing they let it rust up and attempted to “fix it.”
It cleaned up nicely and now looks 10 times better. My crappy pics don’t do it justice, it almost looks like a different rifle in person.
