A large portion of socio-economic elites have always leaned towards socialism/communism as a way to strengthen their position/hold on power.
It got mentioned by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn as an alliance between Soviet communists and western capitalists, although they were not/are not capitalists because they oppose a free market at least as much as any open communist.
It might make sense to agree with Socialism as a concept, it might even have advantages for those in or on the cusp of power
But
Somebody has to pay for it and your base supports you essentially because they either have nothing or have and want more.
