I didn’t find a new member intro thread, and didn’t want to be an anonymous lurker, but I found this forum this morning and felt the need to join.
I don’t plan on posting much, at least at first, but wish to intro myself.
I’m a training scenario writer at Hohenfels, Germany, for the US Army. I’m also a drilling reservist, and teach CGSC (now known as ILE) where I try to pound into the heads of various and sundry field grade officers the importance of KNOWING something about weapons, rather than depending on the typical Army Bullshit™ about them. (This is not in the curriculum, but I insinuate it into the classes, anyway) So far, I’ve almost convinced a few “fine officers” that the M16/M4 needs lubrication, for instance.
I’m also doing ground-work study for a PhD in the History of Technology, with an emphasis on how culture influences tool development. (Rifles are tools, too, right?) I’m a certified Airframe and Powerplant mechanic, love building ARs, shooting, working out, and reading.
Found this forum through 6.8 SPC forum.
Unfortunately, I live in the land of beer, brats and kraut, and don’t think I’ll be able to build ARs for another year or two, when I am able to afford to leave my contract with the .gov.
I joined here just earlier this year myself, after lurking on-and-off for quite awhile prior. Bought a new AR (S&W M&P) last spring, so wanted to get back in the groove with it. This site (i.e. its people) has been a tremendous help. Hope your experiences here are likewise.
That’s what started me surfing the AR forums, too, blackscot.
Truth is, I took a long hiatus from firearms 'til celebrating a “milestone birthday” a coupla months ago. Considering how many true enthusiasts, LEOs, mils and industry populate the AR forums (most of which offer something useful, or at least entertaining), it’d be easy for me to feel like a brown suit in a room full of tuxedos.
But since I’m a voracious reader and lifelong learner, I’m over it – thanks in large part to this forum.
Now I’m in the business of getting some trigger time at a local indoor range, which will be followed by basic and (likely) tactical courses.
In any case, people, thanks for being a great resource for this eager-to-learn novice.
