OK so I’ve read several threads about muzzle devices. I currently am switching things around and looking to dedicate an AR for coyote and other small/medium game rifle. I know the A2 works, but could be improved. I basically want something that will reduce muzzle rise, flash suppression is not a requirement and the blast from a comp is a non issue. I can imagine needing a second or follow up shot, shooting prone or from basic field positions. I’ve looked at the PWS 556 but not sure that I have to spend that much money to get something that works. My defensive rifle has a Battle Comp and spending that much is not an option for this rifle (unless I can find one for about half price) So I guess my question is for my intended role what is the best and then also the cheapest muzzle device?
Well I can find the PWS for half the price of a BC, it’s not out of the ballpark in price IMO. I doubt I’d notice a differance between the BC and the PWS for what I’m doing. But I don’t know how the PWS compares to a YHM Phantom or the like.
That was a double tap, sorry this forum takes 20 minutes to load a thread any time other than in the early morning.
The PWI would be better than YHM (take your pick) or the VLTOR (VC-A2). With muzzle devices there seems to be a pretty good trend with price and effectiveness. The YHM or VLTOR might be a little better than A2, but I doubt it’d be as noticeable as the BattleComp or PWI. If you have a BC already, try out the PWI. If you don’t have the cash, the A2 works fairly well enough. I’d save the extra $50 bucks and get what you want out of the gate imo.
Best for those purposes is probably the FSC-556 or some of the better dedicated brakes.
Cheapest would be the cheaper of the dedicated brakes, or the Rainier XTC. Some of the inexpensive pure brakes that get good reviews are the Miculek and the Nordic Components “tactical compensator” (which is really just a simple brake). If you go to Midway or Brownells and like up AR muzzle devices you should have 10+ choices with several of them under $50.
I just purchased Rainier Arms New RMC. It has the same comp ports as their XTC on the side, but without the pseudo-flash suppressor on the front. There’s a coupon code you can use to get one of the first 250 made for 29.95. It worked for me yesterday. Enter MAP in the coupon code box.
i say the best bang for the buck is the bushmaster ak brake, i had one on a heavy barrel middy and it did not rise, while it was loud was not so bad, it flashed a bit with nato surplus but not much so with 223 commercial stuff
it can be had new for 20-30 bucks from bushy…
it works great on ak 74s it can work good on an ar too
The cheapest muzzle brake is your best bet. The Rainier XTC compares well to the PWS FSC as I have both. The FSC is a little better but not $50 better. If you can find something cheaper than than the Rainier that’s probably your best bet then.
I have the FSC556 permed on a 14.5 middy right now. It eliminates a lot of muzzle rise but holy christ is it loud. Finally convinced my cousin to wear ear protection…
