Anodizing a new build.

I’m planning on building an AR from an 80% lower. I’ll be doing the machining and would like to try my hand at anodizing. Do any of you have any first hand experience with the process? Specifically, I’m wondering if anyone knows the surface area of an average stripped lower. This information will be helpful in the anodizing process. Any advice would be appreciated.

I realize I could send the thing off to US Anodizing and have it done right and likely save some money, but I’d like to learn more about the process. I’ll practice with some aluminum scrap prior to dipping the receiver. I have not started the machining process yet and am not in a hurry. Right now I’m still doing research but I do want to be prepared to go once I start.

My apologies if this is in the wrong subforum. Feel free to move it.

Ive contemplated doing this in the past. I dont have what youre asking but if memory serves me right, Type III isnt easily achievable. Let me try and dig up my old links.

Thanks Col. I have also heard that Type 3 isn’t easily achievable. My research indicates it’s doable though, but I’ll need to control temperatures, amps, and have good agitation of the mix. A type 2 might be acceptable also, but I’m going to shoot for Type 3.
