And Police agencies wonder why the public doesn't trust them

I know there are those who can “Justify” such actions, but justify or not, how do they think the public will veiw them after these kind of actions.

Your wording is all wrong, title and post. Too dramatic and negative.

Doesn’t stand a chance.

So you were there to verify the dog did not present a threat?

Possibly, but the police do shoot way too many dogs from my perspective.

I’m not implying that the story isn’t a blatant display of both overt ignorance as well as an abuse of police power, because it was. And remember that I’ve defended the police many, many times here before.

But that dog was almost incapacitated due to age, and the breed is also known to be docile. So only an profound idiot would have consciously decided to shoot it in self defense.

I just thought the wording of the first post was a bit off.

Gotcha and agreed.

I have a feeling this thread will be locked by page 3 if it makes it that far…

Not needed.

Sucks that their dog was shot :frowning: I would say though that if I was an officer responding to a burglary call my gun would be out and drawn when entering the home…which might explain why they did not use their baton, taser, and or mace.

Poor doggie…

That’s a fantastic observation, but did you actually see the dog in the video? Could you imagine ever perceiving that particular dog as a threat?

The last two responses to this thread are deeply disturbing. Somehow I now see where some of the animosity comes from.

After posting this your position as a rational, fair moderator should be reconsidered.

I did see the dog, I’m not saying that the dog deserved to be shot (far from it).

Definitely not cool… I would be beside myself if something like this happened to one of my dogs.

But even non-lethal methods don’t always turn out the way we’d like them to. Check out the story on this treed bear cub killed with a beanbag round a couple of days ago.

Maybe, but you deemed the scenario as one in which you were comfortable disparaging the innocent. An armed professional public safety officer determining that particular dog needed to be shot is beyond ludicrous and even offensive to behold.

As Joe Shmoe citizen I’d expect a much higher degree of discretion.

Well my opinion is my opinion, and your is yours. It’s unfortunate that their dog was killed whether it was a threat or not.

This is why you absolutely NEVER call the police for ANYTHING that does not have to do with human lives being in jeopardy.

I feel bad for the dog, and said so… If you do not feel bad for the dog, you are also free to say so…

Just a friendly non-Mod reminder… If you want the thread to remain open don’t go down the anti-LEO path. Facts should be discussed and critical thinking & discussion, not just bashing.

Ok, I feel bad for the dog. And I feel bad for the child who lost her dog for nothing except poor “professional” discretion. And I feel bad to see such a professional failure at the expense of the reliant public.

Buck if you think mocking this situation is honorable then apparently you have spent far too much time doing your job. Your words in this specific thread are unprofessional and even frightening.

And I reiterate that I have almost always been an advocate of the actions of law enforcement in these forums. But this is becoming a disgrace.
