Amybody have one of the XSE lightweight Govs? Thoughts?

I don’t have the Gov’t model but I have the Lightweight XSE Commander, does that count? I added a Wilson drop-in beavertail, Wilson 47Ds, and a trigger job to mine. Other than that it’s perfect for me. I don’t mind that it has sharp edges or that it doesn’t have night sights as this pistol was a wedding present from my wife so I don’t ever plan to carry it, but the aluminum frame would lend itself well to that role. It’s very light for a 1911.

You Sir have fine tastes in pistols and wrist watches!

I am envious of both.

Just thought I’d add a pic of mine, this is after having the Wilson beavertail installed. BTW, that’s my wife’s hands holding it.

Thanks RD62.

Colt guns are notoriously sharp as they come from the factory. You can almost shave with the edges on the bottom of the slide. Their so called factory beavertail installation is poor, leaving unsightly gaps. Their rear sight dovetail are usually oversized and again you can see daylight between the dovetail and the sight. I’ve seen similar gaps in S&W 1911s, so Colt isn’t the only culprit.

Buying a half finish 1911 from the factory doesn’t leave a pistolsmith much room to work with if the owner decided later to have it completed.

So that’s why I recommend a basic Colt.

I sold my Springfield a couple years ago. A buddy just picked up a new one yesterday and has given me the itch again (although I not overly keen on stocking a second pistol round again). I think if I pick up another 1911 it’ll be a basic blued Colt series 70. I see that Colt offers a factory “tactical” package with reborn, reliabilty work, etc. Do they do pretty quality work or would I be better off sending it elsewhere. Other than the dehorn and reliability work, i’d probably only want the sights done.

Call me Crazy!!!
I love the Series 80 FPS!!!

In the words of Ron Burgundy, “That doesn’t make sense.”

The slide has to get to the slide stop (dust cover or no dust cover) so that the slide stop may be employed.

It happened.

I have an XSE CC as well, and I’m very happy with it. Some hiccups in the first 200 rounds or so, but its got 14k rounds through it now without any trouble, mostly SWC reloads and some ball. Changed out springs at around 9k. Mine has the stupid duck-bill grip safety, but aside from that I’m very happy with it.

I’m no expert, but I can say without a doubt my LW Gov’t is the best fit and finished Colt I have owned. My beavertail does not have an unsightly gap, nor does it have the infamous rattle, and it has a slight bevel on the edges of the slide. My 1994 pre-CNC Enhanced Officer’s is sharp enough to shave with as is my SS NRM 1991. If you can find one on the shelf, I doubt for the money you’ll find a nicer made in the USA pistol with a minimum of MIM crap.

My Rail Gun has a nicely beveled slide from the factory, the S&A grip safety is nicely fitted and my sights fit nicely in the dovetails. that being said, the Rail Gun that Chuck Rogers posted a couple weeks ago belongs to my best friend and I’ll be sending mine in to Chuck eventually for much of the same stuff.

My Special Combat Government, Combat Elite and “Wiley Clapp” LW Commander all have properly fitted BTs (NOT the infamous “duckbill”) and no sharp edges.
