I played with one last week. It was really nice an light. It also had a real grown-up beavertail on it. Other than sone night sights it looked pretty solid.
I don’t have one but have read several reviews on 1911forum.com and they are all positive.
I came accross this last night.

Yes. I had one for one round. It blew the slide past the slide stop and seized the pistol up beyond repair with anything other than a hammer.
It embodied the phrase “one-shot stop.”
WOW. That is terrible. I have a buddy who has luck like yours. He had a Special Armaments Warehouse Colt 6920 Operator and blew it to high heaven in front of me. So sad.
It sucks when ammo blows up a good gun.
It must have been that ultra-hot Winchester SXZ Training ammo I bought from Bass Pro Shops.
Oh no, factory ammunition never blows up guns. It’s never happened, ever.
The pistol didn’t “blow up.” It was defective.
Did Colt fix it ? ![]()
I have the heavier Combat Commander XSE and it’s been accurate and reliable.
I like it very much. ![]()
Don’t know. I took it back to the dealer from whom I bought and said, “It’s your problem now.” He gave me credit for the purchase, and I went and bought a different pistol.
From my standpoint, there was nothing Colt was going to do with that pistol that was going to make me feel good about (1) carrying it or (2) keeping it in my nightstand.
I am looking at a blue XSE Government Model I think I could just upgrade the beavertail on it…
I just have concerns with the series 80 thing…Have they been proven reliable?
I thought maybe they might have given you a different pistol. Too bad about your luck.
The Series 80 pistols are just as reliable as any other Colt pistol. All of the new Colt 1911’s I have handle in recent months are really well built.
I have a Colt Lightweight Government and love it. It certainly lives up to the “lightweight” moniker, but it very accurate and recoil is not much more noticeable than a steel framed pistol. It is by and far away much more pleasant to shoot than my steel framed Officer’s ACP and the beavertail is well fitted to my pistol.
Mine has been excellent. Very accurate. I have several semi-customs and a couple of full customs by top gunsmiths and I still enjoy and trust my basic / minimally modified Colts. My Lightweight Model has been no exception.
I’ve got a Lightweight XSE Commander. It’s been accurate and reliable.
I don’t see how this is possible based on the mechanics of a 1911. It could be that the recoil spring bound up or maybe the fit between the slide and frame were such that a piece of metal shaving, etc got in there but a 1911 cannot “blow past the slide stop.” The dust cover stops the slide on the frame well before it gets to the slide stop.
Greg:
I thought you gave up on the ancient king of the feedway stoppage pistol? Don’t tell me you’re getting the itch again. LOL
Get you an old LW Commander, have a competent pistolsmith dehorn, put a grip safety, 4lb trigger job, decent sights (gold bead front, Harrison Retro rear), give it a good finish and put a set of CT grips and call it done.
