Ammo suggestions

Starting to see some decent prices now, so what is a good and inexpensive recommendation on training ammo.

Interesting to see on the search here that people use/like Wolf.

How about Prvi Partisan, Federal bulk, Wolf - others? best deal on web, etc.

Would rather be able to use on both my 1:7 and son’s 1:9.

Thanks all.

I usually shoot PMC 55 FMJ and Hornady Training 55 FMJ.

The Hornady ammo is russian steel case with Hornady components. Its a bit of a step up from regular russian type ammo, and can be had for well under 300/1k. I also shoot the 75 GR OTM version, and I get really good accuracy out of it. Beats paying $20/20 for brass case match ammo.

Wolf is ok I guess but its always seemed super weak powered to me. I had a few issues with short-stroking with it in the past, and since then Ive used other brands without any issues.

Thanks! Great tip and input.

Might not be of much help–I handload 55 grain FMJ to duplicate M193 specs, and also 62 gr M855. I also load 52gr and 68gr BTHP match to match specs. So basically I replicate ball ammo for training purposes and develop ladder method loads for DCM guns…For factory I’d use Hornady TAP and Federal’s XM193 and XM855. And Hornady’s match line for precision.

Mike: Best places to buy that you have found? Thanks - its all helpful

Think about reloading.

Just got to watch for sales online. DSGArms is running a sale for 5 PMAGS and 150rds of Fiochhi for like $110? Just got to look around and watch sites for sales…The prices are starting to fall back down again well after the elections were over. I used to pay $175/case of a thousand of XM193 from Wholesale Hunter way back in 04…Also check out PalmettoStateArmory–great folks I’ve dealt with them in person at shows and at their store in Columbia, SC.

Best bet–8 lbs powder for $94 and 1000 M193 projos for $50 and and $30 for 1000 primers (and assuming you have the brass) there’s a 1000 loaded rounds counting a little relaxing time invested. Even the components are sky high compared to just a few years ago…:frowning:

Thanks again - quite helpful.

I do want to reload eventually. What is a good ammo to buy also for the brass for later use? I suppose Federal is best, but what about Partisan or PMC, which seems to be on sale?

Get US made brass–I really like LC brass (only have to ream the crimp out once) and it LASTS…Prvi I’d stay away from as it’s russian made. But toss out any foreign brass, trust me on this. Get you a cheap brass catcher too.

I’d also add to try box of 20 or so of different ammo out there and see what your gun likes, or hates…We hate WOLF here at my house–never tried Prvi…We get FTE’s and DF’s with WOLF so far…Stopped using it. Handloads run 1000% for us  Also REM UMC is CRAP for us as far as accuracy.

See what your rifles like…

I guess PMC is Korean…?

It appears to be in fact Korean and PMX is US.

I could have sworn it was US based and maybe it got outsourced? Found some old 223 and 45 boxes with no mention of Korea on them

Yeah - I had an old box of .357 that said Korea - thanks - there are some decent deals out there now.

I picked up some Fed SS109 from a dealer back home for $190/500 OTD - a little steep, but good ammo, and I like the dealer.

I would prefer 62 gr - 69 gr - should do well in my son’s SMith and my DD.

I suggest you stay away from Federal .223 brass. It’s fine for a loading or two, but less than ideal for multiple loadings; prone to broken cases and rim failures on extraction.

LC and IMI are a couple of the best.

I use the Federal xm-193 as it is the cheapest I can find around my area. I then use the brass for reloading, good LC brass.

Can you send links on your components? That’s far better prices than I’ve been seeing for bullets and powder. I currently reload all my pistol ammo and have been kicking around the idea of doing 5.56 but the prices just haven’t been good enough to push me over the edge… Considering all the case prep I think I would need to do. If you count up all the case prep time, how many rounds can you make in a hour?

I’d be interested in $94 powder. My last WC844T was $94 plus hazmat and shipping in qty 4 or 6 kegs but is now $104.

And I’d be interested in 5 cent 55 gr projectiles. Best I have seen is around 6.8 or 6.9 cents

I’ve been using mostly 62gr HP Brown Bear, been 100% in my Colt and LMT upper (when I had it) and is plenty accurate for training and plinking. Silver Bear is just as good and right now AIM has it for a little over $200 per K.

PRVI is good brass. And its not Russian. (PRVI is Serbian)
