Went to Midway USA, my usual source for ammo, and they were all out my first choices in 45acp, 6.8spc and .223. So I go to Cabelas - out of all of them. So I go to Cheaper than Dirt, then Sportmans Warehouse - all out.
So I called the HH6 and ask her to buy .45 acp at Walmart while she’s shopping today. I come home and she said she’s been to 2 different WalMarts and they are out of .45acp.
I am in NW Aarghkansas and I often cruize the ammo section on grocery runs and there is always a lot of 223, 45, 40, 22, 30-06 and the like. 308 is sometimes a bit thin as is 9mm… Restocking is pretty frequent so far.
Next year around deer season I will again stock up on a few boxes each of Win, Rem and Fed 30-30 as I can’t hardly load for that price with the factory $5 off coupons, but that is the only store bought ammo I have bought in 3 years or so…
At first I thought this was a necro post from 2006 or something… it’s been scarce for a long while. I haven’t bought factory .223 in at least 2 years.
I ran around between several different stores Saturday (including Wal Marts, a Cabelas, and numerous gun shops) and came up with a grand total of zero rifle primers of any kind (obviously Wal Mart doesn’t count as they don’t sell components) and only a handful of 525 round bulk cheapo bricks of .22 for $25 a pop.
I said no thanks on the .22 and found some primers online after looking for about 2 hours.
What is really bad is not just the factory ammo, but reloading components - try to find some bulk 5.56/.223 bullets! Wideners is out of there usual 5K bulk…and all below. Powdervalley and their name brand bulk 5.56 bullets.
Lets not forget those fine folks seemed to have raised the prices of primers and powders alike.
In the last 3-4 days the price of imported ammo has more than doubled. I.E. Wolf 7.62X39mm was $7.99/box of 20 on Tuesday, now $17.99 for the same box.
I won’t get into why this happened. I don’t want to see this thread get locked.
I have noticed the same thing. I mean with all the panic buying I know it is to be expected, but as of real recently it seems like it’s gotten really bad. I mean, shooting .223 is starting to look like shooting .308. Of course it could just be that now I want to buy another case so I’m looking harder. I’m at the point that instead of buying imported prvi or bulk federal, I might as well go down to the local gunshop and buy black hills. I guess if I have to pay a bunch of money for ammo, I might as well buy the quality stuff with something better than fmj bullets(I can get 55gr soft points at an O.K. price).
I just went to all of my usual ammo sites and Wideners is the only one that had any in stock and it was 122 or 123gr. SP. They also had a few hundred rounds of something else. I went to Cheaper Than Dirt and added 50 boxes (1 case) of ammo to the cart and it was 889.00. I almost shit a Twinkie.
I was in the gun store when the change took effect. Bulf packs of ammo were removed from the floor and broken down into individual, read more affordable packs and tagged.
The Wolf 7.62 X 39 ammo went from $7.99 to $17.99 right in front of me. It was also the same price on Cheaper than dirt. It made me sick.
But, at the same time I was glad that I have been loading up on everything for quite a while now. Right before the election I bought a pallet of Hornady TAP Practice 75 Gr. at a screaming price. Glad now, that I did that then. I also bought at the end of last year a boat load of Ranger T 12 Ga. ammo and cheaper , on sale, Remington slug and buckshot.
I am afraid the days of cheap ammo are now behind us. At least until we get a president that will repleal the new tax on imported ammo. 2009 will be a record year for sales of reloading equipment.
Mark, I did not hear anything either. OBAMA, (I hope mentioning that does not get this thread locked) buried the paragraph about the sales on imported ammo being taxed to death so deep inside the $787 Billion dollar stimulous bill, no one knew it was there, until after it was signed and too late. If you remember, he did not want to give anyone the time to read the bill in detail, length.
It seems to me the majority of ammo is imported and even if it is not, domestic ammo will take a big jump anyway.
Even at the higher prices, the smaller gun stores can not even source the ammo they need to replace their empty shelves, as they can not get the ammo.
I do not beleive that imported ammo was banned. However, I could be wrong, I too did not get to read the stimulous bill and the NRA was caught napping.
