I picked up a box of 100 rounds “American Eagle Tactical .223” at gander today for $30.
Does anyone know if its loaded to 5.56mm pressure or .223?

this stuff almost tripped me up at Fisherman’s not too long ago. i pointed at it and said, “oh, here we go!” and started to load up on it… the sneaky fuckers package it like that so you’ll buy it by accident. well i caught it and put it all right back. screw NATO price for SAAMI ammo.
I’ve shot a few hundreds round of it and it worked well.
I bought 400 more today.
Ammunitiontogo has Hornady 55 grain FMJ for $269 per 1000, in case you are looking to purchase in bulk.
It’s XM193, I steer clear of that stuff.
Any specific reason why or just personal preference?
it’s not xm193… it’s ae223.
If I remember correctly the ammunition your referring to is steel cased right?
Whats the problem with SAAMI pressure?
I reload my own ammo to NATO pressure anyways so its not really a issue for me as long as it cycles.
it’s weak, relative to NATO. that means faster drop, shorter effective range, and lighter recoil.
Good point… but 100 rounds for $30 dollars of fun and the brass to reload sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.![]()
no- i’d probably buy it for .30/rnd myself. the stuff was around .40, when i almost confused it with xm193- and that’s even too much for actual xm193, right now.
It is the repackaged American Eagle .223 ammo that used to be sold in the red & blue boxes. Since 5.56 prices have dropped to near $0.30 / rd., buying .223 ammo at the same price just doesn’t make much sense. Pretty damn sneaky, packaging it like XM193.
not locally, and shipping usually brings it up to 34-35/round… 30/round local isn’t a bad price for good .223
guess it depends on whats available to you locally… around these parts- nothing. i got some hotshot for about .26/round a few months ago- not GREAT ammo, but worth what i paid for it
I’ll take AE223 over XM193 any day of the week. XM193 has been too spotting in the QC dept for me to buy any more of that stuff. I find no value in running full throttle ammo for practice. That’s just my preference though.
OK stupid question time…
This is the first ammunition that I have purchased that is loaded to .223 pressure. Will the brass be OK to load to NATO 5.56mm pressures?
I’m pretty sure the answer is yes but, I’d rather be safe than sorry.
why should we believe ae223 is any better in the QC department?
federal was pumping out ammunition like crazy for a while- it’s sort of gotta be expected that more bad rounds would pop up. but having to buy people new guns would, i would imagine, make you re-think some of your procedures. that, and ammo demand has tapered off, hence the recentish price drops across the board. i still think it’s good ammo- q3131 and xm193 are my favorites.
True, but I have gotten so sick of local pricing being out of line that I don’t buy anything except for WWB 9mm locally anymore. I can’t remember the last time I bought .223 locally. You can get Federal XM193 from Palmetto State for $300/k plus $12 shipping, which is a pretty good deal and comparable to most brass cased quality .223 ammo available online and in some cases, cheaper.
Yes. I’ve shot about 11,000 rounds of it so far with two or three dead primers during carbine classes. For the money it can’t be beat.
After the recent difficulty in finding ammo, I am quite happy to pay $.30 retail for .223. I can save a little buying bulk online but if I just want to buy 2-400rds on Thursday for a weekend event, I can do that.
It’s accurate enough out to 100.
And for the confusing packaging…They do put AE223 in pretty big font. I can’t see how they are trying to deceive anyone into thinking it’s 5.56…
