I’ve never installed an Alexa in my home. I don’t have and have never wanted any “smart appliances” Why the **** would I want to trade something that just plain works and doesn’t require an internet connection for something that requires an internet connection to run and could be shut down remotely? I’ve never understood it. I’ll keep my dumb appliances that just work.
Anyone dumb enough to put that shit in their home deserves it. I know completely conservative grown adults who do stupid fukkin shit like use alexa and send their DNA to the genetic analysis companies. WTF is wrong with you morons???
We really haven’t learned our lessons from the Disney movie “Smart House” and it really shows… :sarcastic:
Coming soon:
“Your Amazon bank account has been frozen due to insensitive comments posted by you online. Your home automation has been disabled and locked, your Amazon EV has been disabled indefinitely per your breach or terms of service”…
Without watching it, I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess someone had Alexa installed, said something “stupid” (that being a VERY subjective term), and Amazon shut something off as a result (?).
“Seriously considering?” That guy learned NOTHING. I would have pulled all that shit. If somebody gave me a “smart home” for FREE, I’d have all that shit removed.
I don’t want the operation of all my appliances and my ability to lock and unlock my phone dependent upon a internet connection.
Pretty much. So I was watching Blazzing Saddles and suddenly I got an email from Amazon telling me I violated their user policy and a $10,000 fine was deducted from my bank account.
The story about the non-Anglo guy caught with the Nazi flag had me no shit watching Clayton Bigsby a few nights ago. I guess one needs to be careful. Or just not care.
Ideas HAVE to be bouncing around in Chapelle’s head for a while.
The sad thing is you have half the country or more saying on one hand they feel sorry for the guy but they love Amazon has such a strict anti-racism policy and are glad this feature exists.
1984 has nothing on the level of mental manipulation we’ve been subjected to for decades, and it’s now so ingrained people don’t even realize how how much they support it. Even people that think they are against it…
We have a sonos system (speakers that are connected to the wifi) in our house and that’s it for “smart home” bullshit. Screw Amazon. I can’t believe people are so dumb to let tech have that much control over their house.
The next question is, so did Amazon just not work and he had to do things manually, or did it actually shut stuff off? If he just has to do things manually, that was probably good for his lazy ass. And if things didn’t operate at all because bezos shut it off, I don’t feel any sympathy for him because 1) he’s the moron that let his house control him 2) it’s obvious he’s beyond lazy.
Interesting poll says 1/3 of Gen Z would approve of the government putting surveillance cameras in homes. It is a poll, so take it for what it’s worth.
So-called smart home devices are all over the map, but for purposes of this discussion are generally characterized as enabling the homeowner to remotely control, set or monitor.
Example: My mother was ill requiring assistance for an extended period. While 2,500 miles away in California, I was able to turn the lights on in my Tennessee home at night with my iPhone making it appear someone was home. Other devices allowed me to do things like monitor the temperature and humidity inside my Tennessee home (not just what the thermostat was set at). Even with the water turned off and pipes drained, you really don’t want the inside of your home at freezing temperatures in the winter, or high humid conditions in the summer. Being able to monitor conditions while away allowed me to take corrective action if needed. These type of things, and many more, are how smart home devices can assist homeowners. Of course you don’t have to be thousands of miles away. If returning home when dark, the wife prefers to return home with the lights on. She can do that in the driveway before pulling into the garage or anywhere else.
The advantages of a smart home are obvious. The question is whether those advantages are offset by compromising privacy and, assuming Amazon did disable the service for reasons given, surrendering control of your home to a 3rd party.
