I’m looking for a red dot for my AR-15 (.223). After some research, I’ve fallen in love with the Aimpoint CompC3 30mm red dot. I know the pros and cons when comparing to other Aimpoint red dots, and even though its one of the “lower end” Aimpoint models, it has everything I need.

Frankly, I don’t have $400 to spend on an optic. I still want a red dot with unlimited eye relief, a 2 or 4 MOA dot, and a product that won’t fall apart after 100 rounds like many of the lower end products. I’d prefer to NOT get an eotech holographic sight, since I am not a fan of those reticles and they are also expensive. I’d like to spend between $100-250 for my optic… but there is still the possibility of waiting a few more months to save up for an aimpoint.
Does anyone have experience or recommendations for a red dot that is still decent yet at a lower price point. I’ll only be shooting the weapon with this optic at 50-200 yds. and this will be my first red dot sight.
i’ve gotten compc3s from this guy for $320-$350 before. this is the highest i’ve seen his starting price, though, so maybe that’s lower than he’ll go right now, but you get 3 tries. i’d make offer at $330, then 50, then like 75 or 80 and see what happen.
to answer the question, you really dont want to spend money on a cheap optic… they’re still “expensive” but dont even begin to approach the quality of a C3. the C3 is the least expensive and has the least features, but it’s still very high quality. i’m a cheapskate from hell- this is my optic of choice.
Like the others said above! Caveat emptor. But, since you asked about ‘alter-natives’ how about maybe possibly try looking into IOR Valdada’s R.D.S. Edge. If I’m not mistaken, Rainier Arms has them. Also try contacting Grant of G&R Tactical, he may still offer Aimpoints for M4C members.
While I do agree with the others. I have heard good thing about the Vortex Strykfire. there not an AP, but if you buy it knowing that I would think you would be pleased from what I’ve read. FYI my buddy just got one I will chime in when he receives to give you my impressions. Also, they come with a mount and a 2x magnifier for around $150…
I am no pro and in the same boat. I have no choice but to skimp a little (My wife would kill me with my own gun if I spent 4 or 5 hundred dollars on a red dot) Any way I have been researching this issue and have found an alternative that may be suitable. The Vortex Strikfire 1x 30mm. I can find no bad reviews on it, I think they are American made. I have read a few reviews that stated the quality and craftsmanship are right up there or even surpass Burris (then again they aren’t made in china) They have an unconditional lifetime fully transferable warranty (you don’t see that on an Aimpoint, Burris or anything these days ). They are going for $150.00 at optics planet, sh#@t you could buy 3 of these for the price of one Aimpoint . I personally think that Aimpoints and Eotech’s are a friggen ripoff, and no amount of bells and whistle’s are gonna make me spend that amount of cash on a red dot that frankly is not going to preform that much better than another at a third of the price (you could buy a new upper for your ar at that price)
I’m in the same boat as the OP. I really like the Aimpoint, but I’m starting to think its got the nike $tigma. …you know there you are paying fo the name.
Anyhow back on topic, my friend brought this scope and he swears by it Sightron S334r http://swfa.com/Sightron-1x33-Electronic-Sight-P9193.aspx I just dont know enough about it yet to commit my limited funs to it.
There is a stigma with aimpoint… but it’s validated. Seriously, do the research. Most models have a 5+ year CONTINUOUS battery life. Others? Nope… some not even in the hundred hour range. Look who uses them… there is a reason. Nike is overpriced because of the multimillion dollar contracts they have with superstars. Well, sf guys are more superstar-esque in my book and the contracts they have with aimpoint aren’t getting them paid, the contracts they have with aimpoint are saving their lives, amd, quite frankly, yours.
I did check that out (one of the web sites I was on led me to believe it was American made) It is made in the Philippines, or china , I’m not quite sure some info is misleading. One person that reviewed it said it was made in the same building as some Burris products in the Philippines.
