Alternative Means of Protection

In a few threads some suggest that there maybe an attempt by the current administration to use the National Guard or the U.S. Military to disarm the populace during a SHTF event under the enactment of Marshal Law.

So say that this occurs and your now without any firearms how would you defend your family? What under the radar “LEGAL” items would you resort to and how would you plan to deploy same.

Have you already considered this scenario and how did you work it into your prep’s?

Martial law.

As far as weapons, they’re everywhere. The stuff many people have in their garden sheds could readily be pressed into service as weapons. A machete and garbage can lid would make a OK buckler and “sword” or you could use a table leg or sawed-off base ball bat as a club with some sort of shield.

My favorite funny from years ago:

Better have lots of friends. The “its me and my family against the world” attitude won’t fly if you are limited to melee-type weapons against even fairly small groups of looters.

I’ve “considered it.” It’s not a “consideration” in my preps though.

Slingshot, laugh if you want…

Clubs and garden tools are great, but I think I would still need a projectile weapon… I’d make a bow.

I don’t think my plastic lids are going to do the trick.

Maybe Magpul could start making Tactical Polymer Trash Cans.

Dont make one, you can get a Martin Jaguar for less than $150.

Slingshot with black bands, a lead-casting setup for .44" lead balls, and as much lead as you can stack up, melt down and store in coffee cans. Keep a $6.50 slingshot and a coffee can’s worth of ammo at each window to the house. A car leaf spring can make an incredible overpowered crossbow capable of launching rebar through a few inches of concrete, if you have the time you could build one and amass enough lengths of rebar you could have a car-killing device on hand, that’d probably defeat body armor too. An old motor turned on its side with a chain welded to the crankshaft could spin the chain around a few feet off the ground and make a road impassable (would wreck cars, people, etc.). Explosives and fire are the most efficient way to kill a lot of people quickly…use your imagination.
You could build a trebuchet with modern materials and tools, make it far more efficient.
A sword would work quite well, train with it first.
It’s not too late to bury a few SKS’s, Mosin Nagants, etc. with 500 rounds of ammo per rifle for post-confiscation use, scatter them around your AO.
Compressed air could be used to launch something at an incredible velocity (marbles, cast lead balls?), and with an adequate compressor could fire very rapidly.

Wasp spray.

A flame thrower would be easy to build out of garage and garden equipment.

I have a crossbow that is very nice. It is also great for hunting.

One word…CACHE.

A nice bow is a great idea really.

You can buy one at any sporting goods store, in cash, and just keep it somewhere out of sight. Even if “they” came to take everyones weapons “they” wouldnt even know you owned it (even if they were taking bows from people).

Hmm maybe Ill scour craigslist for a bow now :sarcastic:

Keeping distance is paramount if at all possible.

#1- Crossbows are awesome.
#2 - Bow
#3 - Spear gun. You can find use ones on craigslist (Florida) for $100 and accurate in water 10-15 feet. CON: Single shot. not enough time to reload at this close distance.
#4 - Pole Spear used for underwater fishing (under $100)

The above backed up with far reaching pepper spray/bear spray then use
#5- Machete/sword
#6 - Fighting knife

ETA: I don’t think a slingshot is deadly enough unless a headshot which understress would probably be next to impossible except for the most practiced & skilled.

ETA: And don’t turn in all your weapons. Bury a sniper rifle to wreak havoc and make their life difficult and unpleasant & pistol for the resistance. At the very least bury a pistol. This will enable the gain of more weaponry as they’re distracted by your sexy wife or sister offering their company.

Why are you scoping out my wife??? :jester:

Your post is very good. A pistol is a very good start.

HA! I’ve got good taste what can I say. Only lookin!

Crossbows are the way for accurate shots at distances (65yds), quiet, powerful but slow re-fire rate.

Compound bows have a faster re-fire rate but a shorter effective range when compared to the crossbow with accurate fire to (40yds).

But for shear volume of fire at short range a Comanche horse bow which has a 40 to 45lb pull and a 17 inch release can hit COM at 15yds and penetrate deeply into the chest.

Also a Pellet rifle like the Whisper with its suppressor and steel pointed pellets can do some damage with skull shots.

Stealth is the key with the above weapons so to be able to take a open shot before the hostile takes cover.

For hand to hand a spiked mace and a light buckler shield are hard to beat for shear smashing power backed up by a short sword on the belt.

I also like a short Pike or my favorite the Spartan’s Dory with a Mid-shield.

Tomahawk & short sword.

Cap and ball colt replica X2. Bow, cross bow, machete, gerber bush ax is a great tool and my imagination.

I honestly never considered it. If someone comes to take my firearms I will make sure they a.) Never find them or b.) I die fighting for my rights. Depends on how the whole situation plays out. I would of course rather them not find them.

Anyone ever thought of making compartments around their house to store weapons in such an instance. like inside of walls and such where you would only access them in a last ditch effort or TEOTWAWKI? I highly doubt the searches would be that in depth as to go knocking on walls. I believe it would be just a quick search considering how many people own guns.

But a bow of some sort is good idea to have. Very quiet and will go through soft body armor. Over all a very versatile weapon that has a long history of use as protection and for hunting. I need to look into getting one now.

Good thread.

If it gets to the point we are generally disarmed then there is going to be a lot of dead bodies lying around. Citizens and government bodies. I don’t see that happening in general.

BUT, some individuals could be targeted and disarmed. I would first look at black powder and air powered weapons. I see that Crosman/Benjamin has a .357 caliber air rifle that shoots a 158 gr bullet at 900 fps, pretty close to a .38 Spc+P centerfire revolver, as well as .25 caliber. I have picked up a couple of .177 air rifles for plinking and pest control. I’ll tell you even those little .177" 7.4 gr pellets can dent thick sheet metal at in-the-garage distances. I would not want to be shot by one within 20-30 ft. And of course a brace of BP revolvers and BP rifles would be handy. I’ve not done anything with BP.

After BP and air guns I would look at a crossbow and compound bow. I use to have a recurve bow and enjoyed archery as a teenager, so I might look into that Martin bow suggestion. There are so many rands of models of compound bows it is difficult to know where to start.

Black Powder Revolvers and Cylindered Carbines that have quick change cylinders would work but they produce a large smoke and flash signatures depending on the powder used. But the positive side is there is no forms to fill out and its a cash out the door deal.

As for impact weapons I was playing with a Aluminum MacGregor 25"inch T-Ball bat that was sitting in the basement for years and decided to go to town on my heavy bag using both one and two handed striking methods and the little bat held up nicely without bending or denting. I was able to pound on the bag without major fatigue setting in for a extended period of time so coupled with a simple shield or armored bracers one would have a edge over the untrained fighter.

Throwing knives and blow guns with poisoned tipped darts. That shit will ruin someones day.
