All the commissioners are against NJ getting sports betting

Can some explain this to me? Maybe I’m being naive, but moral questions aside, why would this be bad, or as bad for them, as they are portraying?

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — NBA Commissioner David Stern scolded Gov. Christie and said New Jersey “has no idea what it’s doing” by seeking to allow sports betting in the state in a deposition published Friday in the ongoing legal battle between the governor, the four major professional sports leagues and the NCAA.

Stern and the heads of Major League Baseball, the NFL, the NHL and the NCAA were questioned recently by lawyers representing the state as part of the leagues’ lawsuit seeking to stop New Jersey from instituting sports gambling.

“The one thing I’m certain of is New Jersey has no idea what it’s doing and doesn’t care because all it’s interested in is making a buck or two, and they don’t care that it’s at our potential loss,” Stern said when asked how the advent of sports betting in New Jersey would harm the NBA.

They are probably upset they are not getting a cut of the money. I bet their tune would change if they were getting 10-20% of the “proceeds”.

As betting on professional sports becomes more prevalent and the nut gets bigger and bigger, there is absolutely no way there aren’t going to be pro athletes getting nailed left and right for shaving points, missing a tackle here and there, taking that third called strike, you name it. The money will simply be too powerful and, let’s face it, there are more than a few pro athletes who appear to be morally and ethically challenged.

Once the die-hard sports fans decide the fix is in, it will be the death knell for pro sports. And that’s something the leagues and owners can ill afford.

Is that commentary from pre-Las Vegas era politicians?

Or maybe they don’t know about the bookmakers in the UK, and the rest of the world, as well as the cottage enterprises in your local bars?

It’s a multi-billion dollar industry already. AC is not going to add that much more action.

how the hell is sports betting going to harm the NBA, NFL, etc? If anything allowing sports betting will get the public more enthusiastic about paying attention to the games since they got money riding on them now.

Google Tim Donaghy. He was the NBA ref who had a massive sports betting problem and started influencing the outcomes of a bunch of games.

I love sports betting. I’ve heard it’s illegal in some states though, so I’ve become more careful with who I’ll participate with.

i remember this but whats the difference if he wanted to rig the game legal or illegal betting or not, he still would have done it

Weren’t there some guys from Chicago that threw a game about 97 years ago?

And isn’t there some guy permanently banned from the hall of fame (despite having the most hits ever in the MLB) for betting?

So tell me again how AC is going to make anything change for better or worse?

If anything driving the betting into the black market makes things a lot less transparent. I can’t fathom how going to the casino and betting on a game is worse than dealing with a bookie.

if they dont do it legally they will do it illegally under a black market, so what exactly changed? At least it can be monitored, controlled, and taxed better under a legal market.
