After spending some time with the AK, I realized that it is better for my eyes to have the Aimpoint closer, so I ditched the UltiMAK rail, and asked Joe to replace it with a TWS cover. It’s MUCH more usable now. I am very happy with this setup and can’t wait to zero it at Knob Creek tomorrow.

Awesome. I like the railed dust cover far better than the railed fore end. It allows the use of sights like the Aimpoint but keeps a more classic AK look with the full wood fore end.
Personally, I’m kind of a purist with AKs, but this one looks functional while keeping a good deal of the AK aesthetic. But hey, it’s not about me here. If it works for you and you dig it, then hell yeah.

Thanks man. I love the pure AK look too, and not too many people would spend money for a nice walnut set from Ironwood Designs or have the barrel cut down to 14.5. I have the walnut grip but prefer the feel of the US Palm AK battlegrip instead.
Sure, this could be a safe queen or a museum piece, but I plan on running it as much as my others…so while cosmetics are important to me, it has to function so I can effectively train with it. Thus, the Aimpoint H-1 micro, Vicker’s sling, Surefire G2L…etc.
I don’t feel that I’ve given up any functionality with this AK verses my Noveske or Daniel Defense ARs.

Yes, that is a BM-1 attached to the barrel. VLTOR adapter mounted to it and the Surefire G2L.
No, the dust cover rail doesn’t shift zero. I open it all of the time to clean and lube the gun. The Aimpoint is always spot on. It’s a Texas Weapon Systems dust cover.
