airsoft for the wife to practice on

So contemplating getting an airsoft gas pistol for the wife to practice with at home since the only real shooting she does is at the once a month IDPA matches. She gets frustrated at her performance because she is not progressing fast enough for her competitive spirit. She has bad shooting habits I am trying to break her of but any advice I give is not taken well. She won’t dryfire at home because there is no recoil to cope with and nothing to show if you’re staying on target. I looked into the laserlyte training system but those are expensive and the quality seems subpar.

I figure getting an airsoft that operates like our match guns and her carry gun that she can practice with at home will keep her from getting nervous and improve her confidence in shooting.

My question is what is a quality brand of airsoft pistol that will hold up to regular use? I am looking to go propane propellant as it is cleaner and cheaper. Blowback to simulate recoil and she has a terrible anticipation flinch. Pellets are way cheaper than her wasting my reloads and agrivating herself at me at the range.

I have a Glock19 and an XDm 3.8 Airsoft we use and really love. They are very realistic in size and weight. Both use magazines same shape/size as the real deal. Pictures are Airsoft and real firearm for comparison.

I bought mine a couple years ago, so not sure what’s available today.

Sorry for the duplicate pic. FYI, the FDE is the Airsoft XD clone. Real Glock Gen 4 is on top.

Better pic of the Glock Airsoft gun…

I would need a glock 19/23 size, government 1911, and cz p09 or p07. She shoots the p07 decently and the glock trigger has been cleaned up to a nice light smooth pull. She gets antsy while pulling and jerks the trigger when she feels on target. I made her do drills with a revolver where I load spent rounds with live so she can feel herself anticipate. She just doesn’t practice enough to make the good habits stick.

These are not your Walmart quality Airsoft. Suggest you buy one model, some green gas, and some Airsoft pellets to see how you like it before buying three

Do your research as I’ve given you different options at the link. I prefer the gas blowback air soft guns with the detachable magazines that shoot the plastic Airsoft pellets. You load gas into the removable magazine versus using a co2 tube.

I’m not really an expert, so please find one locally or online. But I can tell you most decent models that really simulate the real deal guns will not be cheap…probably $100 or more.

I am somewhat of a fan of using quality airsoft in some situations as long as you can mimic what you need to learn. The problem I have found, even with high-end airsoft, is a bit of a lack of consistency at range. Even with adjustable systems, maximum effective range is difficult to guess, so shot placement might be difficult to analyze; i.e. cut 25yds in three (25ft) for airsoft practice (doable with some high-end guns). One might get a pretty comparable group to what he or she might be able to hold at 25yds with the real deal, but the BBs might spin in such a way that their trajectory curves up instead of flying straight. If one has an anticipation habit, and traditionally holds groups in the six o’clock region, he or she might not see that anymore, and might think that the issue is corrected.

To sum it up, even high-end airsoft might not provide the kind of feedback you need to improve fundamentals.

If she focuses on what she is doing she can hit center but when she tries to rush, she jerks the trigger and hits low left. If she had more trigger time to build her confidence and smoothness i think center hits would improve. Four hour match with 120 round count a month just isn’t going to get her there. She does carry daily with a glock 23 and i believe she can get good hits close up but as the distance increases, her bad habits start to show more. For her safety and others, i want to find a way she can shoot more without using up an expensive amount of ammo and gives her feedback on if she is doing better or worse.

The best thing for me about airsoft is that we can train/practice in the garage or backyard anytime, any weather.

We keep distances to about 10 yards max, and while I use IDPA targets, we use half index cards as the “hit zone” on chest and head.

We practice draw from concealment, move/shoot, etc. it’s fun and cheap family time…
