That’s a really cool photo! But the thing about aircraft is their movement is what will usually give them away visually. The pattern certainly helps, but can only do so much. Another thing to consider is a pattern that will make them hard to spot when parked on the ramp so attacking aircraft have a harder time seeing them (as well as overhead collection platforms).
The paint I always thought was slick was the false canopy on the bottom of a plane. Some even had a white dot to represent the pilot. They use a somewhat shiny paint and it can fool your eye into believing the plane turned in the opposite direction from what it really did.

Exactly. There’s also the issue that at the limits of visual engagement range, the camouflage pattern and colors tend to blend together into a uniform black/gray blob due to the resolution limits of the human eye.
There is ongoing experimentation with “lighting up” the aircraft with special lights that eliminate the shadow “black/grey blob” effect and render the aircraft nearly invisible to the eye at range. Close up, it reminds me of the foot lamps of old entertainment stages.
That ongoing experimentation started in WWII.
I think they’ve lost interest in hiding from eyes these days.

Yep, been going on for as long as I can remember. I also agree that Radar and IR search and track systems are a much greater concern these days than optical tracking.
With the advent of systems like the F-35s sensor fusion “x-ray vision”, optical camouflage lacks relevancy if you still show up on IR and Radar and your opponent can integrate those into a useable 360 degree synthetic vision display. If you’re not LO in IR and Radar, you may as well paint your plane bright pink in that situation…

off subject, but does anyone else here wish that they could put the optical system on other fighters. Especially the raptor. My goodness what a weapon that would be.
