I usually buy my Aimpoints from Larue, with Larue mount. On a SR-15, what Aimpoint would you buy? What height? 1/3 cowitness?
I currently run m4’s and like them much. But I have seen so much on the Micros I thought I would check with those that have had both to get Pros and Cons on the Micro?
I was a big fan of the Comp M4S because of its battery life and the ability to use a single AA battery. I bought a T1 off my buddy and started running it on my SBR. I must say after shooting with the T1 the Comp M4 doesn’t appeal to me anymore. The size and the less material around the lens makes it amazing imo. I run absolute co witness on all my optics. If you are gonna run an aimpoint on an KAC rifle, I would get the T1 and a KAC mount w/ KAC battery cover. (I like to make things match).
I’ve had several of both. FOR ME I prefer the M4s for its larger fov, and it worked better for me in unconventional positions. I sold off all of my T1’s. I’m now on the TR24 triangle bandwagon.
I prefer the M4S. For me (and evidently I’m in the minority) the T1 when pointed at a point light source as in an overhead light down a hallway or into a sunset would create a semi-latent/semi-opaque reflection of the red dots 3 reflector panels (not sure what they are actually called) and depending on the intensity of the light source would obscure too much of the target for me. Others I know and respect have said that if you train enough you do not notice it or if you concentrate on your target and not the dot you do not notice it… for me I couldn’t get past it and dumped mine for the M4S and have never looked back. Also the sub 4MOA dot on the T1 held “me” at about 200yds for accurate shooting. I love my M4S and the 2MOA dot gets me shooting out past 400yds with much more success. If you do use the T1 mount it closer to the eye for unconventional positions it helps. I am sure I will try a T1 again, but I love my M4S.
As for the co-witness. I prefer the lower 1/3. After discussing this with several hi-speed guys and my own experience I’ve decided the lower 1/3 works best “for me”. 2 main reasons. One is that I find it faster. I have been trained for so long to find the front post that when presented with both my eye tries to decide between the two for a moment when with the red dot I should be looking at my target and using the red dot the way it was meant to be used which gives it the speed the system makes available to you… i.e. not having to find target and then refocus on post. Second full co-witness is more clutter (front post) to obscure your FOV when you can have a cleaner FOV with dot only using the lower 1/3 setup. My 0.2 pesos
I had been running lower 1/3 cowitness M3s and decided to try an H1 with a lower 1/3 mount.
Trying the H1 was going out on a limb for me -I beat the piss out of the M2 while in the Army and hadn’t seen one fail so the natural thing to do was to buy the M3 for my personal use since the M3 is but an M2 with better electronics. I felt reliability of the H1 was unproven and when it comes to a tool that I trust my life with a proven track record is important, however I was willing to give it a try.
I liked the light weight and compactness of the H1, however I disliked running the H1 lower 1/3 on my Noveske as the dot projector interfered with the sight picture through the BUIS. It was a minor thing, but a problem I did not have with the M3 mounted on my LMT. See Pictures:
Running absolute cowitness is out of the question for me. It’s a matter of comfort, something I am not willing to compromise so I put up with it.
Eight months after I purchased the H1 it fell apart. A rather large spring came loose and was rolling around the inside of the glass. I assume it was the spring that held the dot zeroed as the dot was still on -but it was all out of wack.
It has been several weeks since I sent the H1 in for repair and I am still waiting to hear back from Aimpoint about this. According to them this ‘should not have happened’ but we all know lemons slip by QC, even with great companies like Aimpoint. But even knowing that my H1 was a lemon I would have a tough time putting it back on one of my rifles.
So this past weekend I decided to give Larue a call an order another M3. You simply can’t go wrong with an M3.
My H1 has given me zero problems. The smaller diameter takes a little getting used to if you have been using a larger diameter red dot(m4 or m3). Now getting used to that smaller diameter is nothing but practice and for whatever reason I feel like I have less of a blind spot off to my right side compared to using one of the bigger tubes.
Of course, I’ve heard people argue both way on the small diameter vs. large… for me it looks high speed, I’ve never been worried about hitting it on things (and I have) and I like the field of view better.
Up until now I’ve never heard of a problem(rarely a reason to deal with) with AIMPOINT’s customer service. It’s sad to hear that even their customer service has gone down hill. Seems like everyone’s is.
I currently own 2 T-1’s and an H-1. I use LW barrels and Troy Extreme rails. Weight is a bad thing. I’ve used T-1’s for 3 years now. I did have one fog up at a Pat Rogers class in the rain last year. It went back to Aimpoint and I had it back good as new in about 3 weeks. At the time John from aimpoint told me mine was the first civilian T-1 to have this issue. FWIW I’ve also had 2 M-2’s go bad over the years. I can’t comment on the M-4 as I’ve never owned one or spent ant significant amount of time with them. For me and my shooting skills and type of shooting I do I see no reason to change them. I would like to try a TA44SG-10 someday.
I personally like the M4s. Battery is very common (AA), longer battery life, seems like it may be more rugged, I like having the flip caps. 1/3 cowitness for me
