I pose this question in regards to an aimpoint I am truly looking at to buy. I went through the “is it real, or is it fake” acrobats, and have determined it is real. Course, this came with a call to aimpoint. They did the same, “yeah, better be careful about ebay,” such as I replied, “why I’m calling.”
Then I told him that the sight in question said “Made in Sweden,” which the service rep said, “it’s highly possible it could be stolen government property.”
Has anyone dealt with this before? I know there was a guy on here having that “kind” of problem with an ACOG. But ebay is littered with these M-68’s. Last thing I want to do is defraud the government, or show up to a match and someone points out stole DOD property on my rifle.
P.S. I had sent an e-mail about the auction in question to aimpoint before the phone call, and the reply said “it seems okay.”
Not sitting where I can go check. Don’t Aimpoints all have a S/N on them? Get the S/N and call Aimpoint back and see if they can tell you whether it went govt or commercial.
Oh, done did. Actually they didn’t want the serial number, but they said the “Made in Sweden” is the clue that it is government issue. They also said they don’t keep a data base on such matters…which is odd.
There are MANY M68s that were DRMOed, acquired legally and with government consent by individuals. Once they take possession of those items they can do whatever they want to with them, to include selling them.
What I would be careful of is the fact that to be DRMOed, there was something wrong with the optic. Maybe it will be/was a simple fix to get it back up and running, maybe it will be a POS for the rest of its natural life.
Looking at our M2s here for sale they don’t say “Made in Sweden” but two issued ones do say it. Maybe the reps right about that. These issued M2s are abut 4 years old
Sandblasted in Iraq I bet. We got a box full of these that look the same. Big Army didn’t want them and they got passed down the food chain. All of them work, but a few of the rotary knobs are broken… they keep rotating. What is interesting is that the glass on these is still in great shape. The fact that these are still working says a lot for the optic and Aimpoint.
Matter of fact, I got one of these on my working gun. Issued mount works fine for me. I can’t remember the last time I changed the battery.
I have no idea if the Ebay optics are hot or not, but I bet they are in working condition. Now, what about those aviator watches he also has for sale LOL?
I would guess that is an army optic. The Army M68 kits that were M2 based included the M2, QRP mount and spacer, the long M16 mount that attaches to the carry handle and hangs out over the handguards, the killflash, and the rubber bikini covers. (According to the Aimpoint rep I spoke to many many moons ago). This does not have the m16 mount and the killflash but has the rest. It seems to curiously also have the extra battery compartment.
It also says “MAde in Sweden” which my commercial M2 from around 2003 does not say.
Yeah, as far as I understand, that is basically what is in the box the military was getting from Aimpoint for the M68 issue.
Is that standard issue as well? I mean, it looks like a steal…but again, I’m worried it is.
The extra battery compartment is an add-on AFAIK and was not in the m68 box. Again, this is from a conversation I had with an Aimpoint rep several years go so I may not be 100% correct but think I am more or less correct.
Since they say “Made in Sweden” on them and Aimpoint says that is a clue to Army issue, and our circumstantial evidence of commercial M2 not saying that backs that up, I would not buy it unless the eBay guy can provide a bill of sale from an Army or Gov sale to prove it is legit.
That is how I personally would handle it.
Otherwise, find a good price dealer (talk to Grant at G&R) who can get you a C3 for a good deal.
hell Buy it keep all the sellers info and if anyone comes after you give them the seller info and tell them he said it was Not stole DOD property .you would be out some money but hell for that price ,I wish I had some extra cash I would jump on it .
