After 50 years, I quit.

Dipping snuff that is.
I finally just had enough of it and quit. It’s been about 6 weeks now and I’m sure done with it.
35 cents a can when I started.

Well done!

That, is a miserably difficult accomplishment. Tobacco, for me, was a Bitch to cut loose.
There was nothing quite as enjoyable as a big gob of Wintergreen Skoal first thing after waking up……
Or eating
Or drinking
Or after Sex
Or exercise

Dupe is back

I have to admit I was a bit grouchy for a week or so.
My tobacco of choice was Copenhagen for decades and then I discovered “Grizzly fine-cut Natural” which I am convinced might be the strongest snuff out there.

Honestly, just couldn’t taste food anymore.

Congratulations! Stay strong!

I quit tobacco many times, and started up for duration of deployments and after uniform, a few hours every shooting outing or golf game.

But I’m done now, hopefully for good.

I had my last drink Thanksgiving afternoon. Not nearly as hard…and plan to make 2024 tobacco and alcohol free.

Sugar is next. Cut way back but total elimination is a bitch!

A friend who had dipped for decades finally decided to quit. He said it was the toughest thing he ever did and missed it every day. He died about a year later. Should have kept dipping and enjoyed his last year on Earth.

ps. Congrats!

My wife is a dental hygienist and up north she had some patients who dipped, but down here it is way more prevalent. She has many horror stories of what that stuff does to your mouth. You are much better off.

Impressive that you survived that stretch. A tough habit to quit as I’ve heard.

A good buddy who is married to my cousin just went through a rough surgery not a month or two ago…they had gone in & removed a cancer mass from his cheek last year & had just gotten back from MD Anderson with a clean bill of health when his jaw started to ache a week later. Went back to MD & had one of these damn turbo cancers where it had gotten into the bone. Surgery included removing / replacing bone from his leg. He’s only in his late 40’s but had been dipping since he was a kid.

I had just bought a new can of Cope when my cousin had called to tell me all this…tossed it & hadn’t looked back since. I’ve done it off / on for the past decade. Good riddance.

It’s pretty easy to not relapse when you close your eyes & see your friends face disfigured.

Not to dissuade you, but have you thought about using nicotine pouches instead? Nicotine, while addictive, is very beneficial to your brain. It’s getting your nicotine from tobacco that’s the dangerous part.

Good for you. That shit is gross.

Good job!

Good for you sir!

Good job and are you getting your sense of taste back?

Not yet, but I’ll be patient.

I hear you. Quit chew about a year and a half ago after 40yrs. Started out with Redman at Ft. Benning, then Wintergreen Skoal for the rest of my addiction. Hell, at one time I chewed and smoked cigarettes at the same time. But then my dentist gave me a concerning lecture about receding gum lines and it provided sufficient motivation to quit. Have been using a supposedly safe alternative called Smoky Mountain Herbal Snuff. Made out of Corn Silk, etc. Not the same satisfaction as nicotine and tobacco but it does fill that familiar empty feeling in the gums. Now I’m addicted to a supposedly non-addictive chew alternative. Go figure.
But at least my gums are looking healthier.

I tell you what, when I was a 20 something young Sergeant, I went to the Dentist and he did some poking around and then some X-rays and asked me if I dipped snuff.
He then said there was an unknown mass in my jaw and they wanted to operate immediately.
I was sure I had the big Casino, for sure I had oral Cancer.
Come to find out my Appalachian breeding won out and it turned out to be a third set of teeth.

I probably took a dip waiting for the bus to my Kaserne

Congratulations. Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I’ve had to do. Well worth it though.

Hell yeah, that’s the spirit! : )

Congrats on a truly difficult victory.

I am well into my 60’s, and grew up in West-By-God-Texas. All of us started dipping Copenhagen when we were 13-14 years old. You would just go to the convenience store and buy a roll for about three bucks.

When I was 18, I started smoking Marlburo reds. I dipped and smoked all the way through the military, until I was in my 40’s.

The point of that is I could pick up a can or pack right now and enjoy it. I still want them every single day despite quitting over 20 years ago.

An MD I worked with years ago said it was easier to quit heroin than nicotine. He was an addiction specialist at a very large hospital in Houston. Although I never worshipped the poppy, I agree with his analysis.

Congrats again on your willpower and strength.
