Advice sought: switching receiver extensions

Maybe my search abilities aren’t up to snuff here, since all I got was a bunch of varied topics with not alot in common…

Here’s what I’m trying to do.
I have a Commercial diameter receiver extension on one rifle that has been staked, albeit a bit half-assedly.

I bought and want to install my new milspec Magpul CTR stock on the rifle. I know I need a new milspec receiver extension, and will be buying one. What about the castle nut? Do i need a new one, since the staking will be ‘broken’? FWIW, this is for a 6.8SPC build, with a 16" bbl.
Thanks,
Pat

you might be able to de-stake and save them, but for $12 , just get a new castle nut and end plate along with the extension and be done with it.

Good luck!

Agreed, I’ve always found it much less stressful to just use new parts, especially when they are inexpensive. Less stress trying to remove the existing part without “damaging” it, and there’s no question about the integrity of the parts in use.

The staking should actually be of the receiver endplate to the notches in the castle nut, so there really shouldn’t be any reason to replace the castle nut. Of course, there’s really no reason NOT to replace both either. Best practice is to replace at leas the endplate.

I actually prefer to put a dab of the same moly grease I use at the barrel nut on the inside of the castle nut. Since it’s the staking that’s holding the nut in place ultimately I find it makes it just a little bit easier to take apart again later if need be.

For re-staking the new part you can use a hammer and chisel, but I prefer several cycles of an automatic centerpunch. I just keep clicking away with it until I’m satisfied. Remember to stake the correct side of the notch so as to resist loosening, not tightening. I’ve seen people stake to the wrong side of the notch and had the nut loosen just a bit.

Thanks all, new components it is.

While you have the extension off, maybe now’s the time to add a QD endplate or ASAP if you were planning to.

Good thought. That’s why I haven’t staked the castle nut on my new lower yet. I haven’t decided on what end plate I want.

I’m very partial to the push-release sling attachments found on railed weapons, and on the very back of the stock. I have no use for an attachment at the castle nut, as my uses preclude any need for one, but a definite need for the versatility of a two-point.

Got my new milspec tube from SKD at 25% off due to their celebratory sale. Perfect timing…
