Advice - S&W and Aimpoint or Colt 6920

I have about $1300 to spend and wish to break into the AR world.

I was considering a S&W M&P and an Aimpoint or a Colt 6920. This may be the only AR I ever get.

Would you recommend the Smith + optics or Colt alone?

Thank you.

If this is your only rifle you are going to buy… then i say COLT… you can get an optic anytime down the road(they are not going to ban optics).Get used to useing iron sites first ,then move to an optic. The smith is not a bad ar-15(they use LMT BCG’S in the smiths now) but the Colt is a higher quality rifle. Also if you take some classes, the Colt will have better odds of it not haveing any issues when it is ran hard.

You could also buy an LMT upper and lower separately for around $900-$1000. This would also give you the option of buying the 14.5" upper without paying the $200 tax stamp and have someone permanently attach a flash hider for around $25. You would then have up to $400 for your Aimpoint.

Colt 6920

Colt 6920 (P-mags,Ammo, and at least one basic Carbine course) - red dots are a waste of money if you are new to AR’s.

I would say take off the carry handle, sell it on ebay, and buy a LaRue BUIS.
Pretty sure you can sell the carry handle for almost $200; I sold a RRA carry handle on Ebay for $145. (Just food for thought).

Between the two listed, get the 6920 and shoot irons for a year until you can save up for the Aimpoint.

With that said, look at LMT and ADS as well.

S&W is running a $100 rebate on their AR’s right now. Give us a call, maybe we can put a package deal together for you and save you some money.

Colt, yup. Then you will catch the EBR disease and the rest will follow…

Another vote for the Colt 6920, as the other guys said, shoot the irons, buy a red dot later on when funds allow and you can sell the carry handle since you will not need it. Good luck.

Though I was really impressed with the M&P-15 I fired, I’d have to say Colt as well. I may be in the minority, but I’d keep the carry handle and shoot stock for a while. Down the road, get your red dot, (I prefer the Trijicon Tripower over the Aimpoint) - I think you’d be remiss if you didn’t at least look into one and compare the two. I actually kept the carry handle on my old Colt, mounted a 4x scope on it and kept it in my range bag just for a change of pace. When you’re ready for the red dot of your choice, pull the carry handle and mount it in a LaRue QD LT-105 and plunk a Troy Flip Up Rear BUIS behind it…

I think if you have your heart set on the M&P/Aimpoint combo now, then go for it, but if I had the chunk of dough to lay down right now, the Colt would be hard for me to pass up…Good luck and keep us posted…
