Advice on cleanup

Any advice on how to get the crap off of these? It looks like they were spray painted coyote brown. I was thinking mabey a dremel?

Acetone

Don’t use a dremel for this.

Acetone, maybe some break cleaner, MEK, or methylene chloride all should work to remove the paint. Be careful using solvents.

cheap brake cleaner from wally world

Avon
Skin so soft coat it with a meduim coat, let sit 20 mins use a soft bristle tooth brush and lightly scrub and the paint will come off. dont laugh to much we found this out at Scout Sniper School in LeJeune. The students would paint their guns early in the school and then try to scrub it off weeks later. It works and does not ruin the finish of the weapon. Marines used to wear it under their G-suits to keep the chiggers and ticks off during stalks.

Thanks for the advice SGTMAJ, Im gonna go try to find the Avon and post some finished pics when I’m done.

I have never had such a hard time trying to find something in my life…you can’t buy that stuff in stores. You are refering to the spray stuff they make right?

Back when I was in the Corps it came in a bottle and we mixed it with some water then used a spray bottle. But that was 20 years ago.

It works great for noseeums, but I had never heard of it being a paint remover. Great tip! Thanks!

I’m sure it would work my problem is finding the product. I know nothing about skin care products but today I got a crash course from my wife and sister in law…aparently these skin products can be used to clean all sorts of things. Skin So Soft is a product brand by Avon and there is 50 different actual sprays and lotions. If I go rubbing all of them on my rifle it’s going to smell like a whore house.

This stuff?

lol…nope, not the sunscreen. Go to avon.com and order the regular “liquid” skin so soft. It should work. Let us know…

Rifle smelling like a whore house. Reminds me of the joke. The Gen and the SGTMAJ were walking through the P.X. when one of the girls came from behind the perfume counter and sprayed the SGTMAJ with one of the perfume samples the General said " Dont spray that stuff on me my wife will think Ive been in a whore house !" To which the SGTMAJ replied " Its okay my wife doesnt know what the inside of a whore house smells like."

Brake Cleaner then Acetone if you need something more harsh.

MEK will remove the SFL inside the upper.

Any cheap choke/carb cleaner that comes in the spray can. Wet it down and let it set for a couple of minutes and then spray it again. Repeat until you are happy with the results.

Are you wanting to refinish it or just get the paint off? If it was my upper I would completly disasemble it. Strip it in an abrasive (Media) box and either repark/or paint it with desired color of KG/Norrels/Duracoat/etc. Paint over park works just as well.

I just picked up some crap at a gun show, it’s used to get spray paint off of cars without damaging the finish, added bonus of waxing the barrel. It’s working slowly. I do plan on refinishing it at some point but for right now I just want the paint off without damaging the upper or barrel. As the paint comes off it looks like these were painted to cover up scratches to prevent rust as a lazy fix to refinishing it. Unfortunately, it was a crappy paint job and I’m going to attempt a more permanent fix but I have no experience with this type of thing.

I am making some progress. The finish was already scratched in a few places and was heavily covered in some spots. I’m using a bore brush on a rod with the car wax/cleaner as a lube. After I started I realized any lubricant would work because it’s just sticking to the paint that the brush is working up. I’m also using an old T-shirt to wipe away the wax/paint mix. A good stiff brush of some type would be less abrasive but someone had already done a terrible job of trying to take the paint off and this is never going to look brand new without re-finishing it.

Gumout carb. cleaner,it work’s great on paint but won’t hurt the anodizing ,it also works good on the carbon build up.

I have used Gumout anf brake cleaner both did an excellent job.
