Advice on 16in. Recce

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction on barrels and gas systems for a 16in. precision carbine? What would the best route be for tackling a project like this. I’m hoping to be able to shoot greater than 150m and is that unreasonable for a 16in. carbine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, but your post makes absolutely no sense. Try it again.

What in the world makes you think that shooting 150 meters could be unreasonable? I can do that with an Aimpoint on a 10.5" while standing and shooting at a moving target…

Occasionally.

What’s a Recca?

Why are “dick head tough guy” responses becoming the norm on this forum? I think the OP is simply asking for barrel recommendations and perhaps carbine or mid-length gas system.

Might want to look at what Monty over at Centurion Arms is doing with his Recon uppers: http://centurionarms.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=178

If anyone knows how to provision a recce-type precision carbine, it’s Monty.

What’s your budget, all in?

It helps a lot if people spell out their uses, desires, budget, what type of optic they plan on using ect.

Vague semi incoherent questions don’t help them or us.

Obviously, but not everyone knows this. This guy just joined the forums this year and only has a few posts. There are nicer ways to ask a new member to be more specific then “try it again”… and spare me more of the tough guy statements like “you have to have tough skin around here”.

Been meaning to ask but didn’t want to start a whole thread, do you know if these are from douglas blanks as well?

Sorry for thread drift.

Any decent rifle will put out decent groups at 200 yards if you do your part. The link to Centurion already posted is a great option for more accuracy. Bravo Company’s 410 Stainless barrels are very accurate. Noveske makes a very accurate barrel, as does LaRue, White Oak, and a bunch of others.

If you just want to keep center mass at silhouette targets at a couple hundred yards, something like a plain-jane 16" BCM chrome lined barrel would do the job. If you want to shoot for small groups, then something like the BCM, Noveske, WOA, or Centurion stainless are great choices.

And who are you referring to as a dick head? I didn’t see anything that was a dickhead comment from any of us that posted before you.

IG simply stated the OP didn’t make much sense… I stated that the M4 is very capable at 150 meters and 40Arpent asked what a Recca was…

A dick head respons is what he would have gotten had he posted that on Lightfighter.

Here, we need some clarification in posts. Unlike AR15.com, you can’t just come here and ask “Which AR should I get?” and expect a reasonable response. Well, you can’t expect a reasonable response on TOS either, but that’s for different reasons.

So, basically IG gave the Lil’ John “WHAAT?” reply and you think he should have given the sophisticated Lil’ John reply from the Chapelle Show? I hear ya, but sometimes here people just want to get right to the point without talking around it for 10 posts.

Had his original post been more detailed and with the necessary information we would need to even begin to help him, this thread would have already been done and answered instead of getting the TOS special.

I understand your point here as well, but things work out just fine over here. People either understand it’s meant to get to the point and not meant as an insult…most of the time…and they either stick around or go to another forum.

I don’t like that there have to be to-the-point replies that people can take as insults, but if there weren’t, this would just be another AR15.com or GlockTalk.

No one needs thick skin around here, they just need to think before they post and ask themselves if someone I didn’t know posted this, would I be able to answer it? If the answer isn’t 100% yes, then don’t post it and the skin can stay thin… or thick, to each his own.

Along the same lines, I was going to ask what kind of precision are you looking for. I have a DDM4 V5 with a standard weight 16" chrome lined barrel and can consistently hit near the center of mass on a torso sized plate (about 16" x 16") at around 250 yards with an EoTech 512 without magnification. Not sure if I would get good groups out of that, but the 16" barrel is much more accurate that I am capable of at that distance.

My rifle if capable of around 2 MOA if shot from a secured bench. Just me shooting from a bench or standing, probably easily expand that to something like 3 or 4x that. If you wanted tigher groups, perhaps maybe match grade SS barrel and match grade ammo.

The comment “try it again” sounds like a bad parent talking down to his 10 year old kid which in my book is a dick head comment. If I misread this statement then I am the dick head and I apologize.

A Recca is basically a 16in. spr. I wanna try to spend about 500-600 bucks for a upper without a optic. Im asking about barrels because I don’t know if a stainless steel barrel is more accurate than a good BHF barrel is and what the better value would be. Also what would be a better gas system for distance shooting a carbine or mid length? I want to have the confidence to smoke ground hogs and coyotes at 150m meters and farther and be able to put out sub in. groups at the range. I know for hitting a man sized target a quality carbine barrel like a BCM is going to produce good hits all day on a larger target. I asked here because at ar15.com most are stuck on the $600 striped barrels that are well out of my pay grade and they usually are misinformed outside what rifle they have in their hands.
I would like to have more range than previously stated but had no real experience past 100yds so what kind of effective range could i expect from a quality 16in.?

Sorry if I’m not very good at stating my questions from my lack of knowledge on the matter.

Oh, you mean Recce (rhymes with becky). Most of the higher-end 16" platforms with CL barrels are going to be 1-3moa. Sometimes you luck out with better, just luck of the draw. If you want better than that for varmint hunting, you are probably going to have to step up to a better barrel (i.e., stainless, match-grade), especially if you want guaranteed accuracy. Mid-length is going to be a little softer recoiling than carbine, with a little less gas port erosion (negligible unless you’re firing very high quantity).

Recce(British) = Reconnaissance = Recon(American)

I read that the chrome lining can be uneven affecting the accuracy of the barrel. I already planned on buying a quality barrel because most of the parts of a ar support the barrel right? I’m trying to build a rifle once and not go back and replace thing because I was cheap or misinformed.

The gas system length has to do with the barrel length not how far you are shooting. But generally 16" barrels have either carbine or mid length gas systems with most SS 16" barrels having mid length.

I think your best bet would be this: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-SS410-16-Mid-Length-Upper-Receiver-Group-p/bcm-urg-mid16%20ss410.htm

All you would need is handguards, BCG/CH, and the optic/sight of your choice. You can always upgrade to a railed forend later down the road.

You can also get the same configuration in CHF or standard 4150CMV but they will not have the same accuracy.

Keep in mind SS is not really designed for high rate of fire or doing lots of drills with. If you’re just looking for a casual use gun with great accuracy SS will do a fine job. Just dont go blasting like crazing with them and they will last a long time.

Lastly…its RECCE not recca.

Yeah i just changed it to recce i was talking to my gf becca when I was doing the OP.

I won’t be doing any high count drills so the sustained fire won’t be a issue. I wasn’t sure about the gas system effecting the accuracy because I didn’t know if the gas block position had a affect on it. I just help a buddy put his first ar together with a BCM upper and they are some nice quality but I don’t need the A2 front sight since I’m just going to put a free float on from the start so I don’t have to change the hand guards and the gas block later.

You guys are very helpful and I appreciate it.
