Action Cameras - any recomendations?

Ok, so a buddy if mine has a cheap helmet camera that he uses when snowmobiling, but the video is a bit grainy. I’d like one for recording shooting sessions. Has anyone worked with/used a helmet/visor mounted camera for training purposes while shooting?

I’ve looked into a couple online, all within the $130-$300 range, but most have bad reviews.

Any thoughts?

ContourHD. But I’m biased since we designed that camera for VHoldR.

The Flip branded cameras have produced adequate video for youtube and such. I recently saw a Sony competitor that I am investigating now. What is the purpose, do you wish to analyze shooting, or go further? For analysis, the Flips are fine.

This was taken by a friend with a Flip:

I’d recommend the GoPro cameras. I’ve used them with great success both mounted on a speargun as well as a SCUBA diving mask down to about 160’ feet, and it is also very rugged. You have to get a little bit creative to figure out good mounting options in some cases , but that is the fun part :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks guys.

The ContourHD kinda looks more like what I want, but the GoPro appears to be a better camera. Looks like it has some image stabilization. Couldn’t find that anywhere on their site, but their road race videos look a little more stable. That may very well be due to how it’s mounted. The GoPro seems quite a bit bigger as well.

Keep the info coming if someone else has first hand experience with either of these or some other brand.

Thanks again.

Some samples of my footage:

That is awesome footage. Looks really good at 1080p. I never recorded any footage above water with my GoPro, so I cannot compare the quality between the two apples to apples. It seems to be no less than on par with a GoPro, if not better. Also, that looked like a really fun stage!

How is your camera mounted? Also, what is the field of view of the camera?

It’s 135 degrees for it’s FOV.

I have it mounted to the flat side of my Sordin Supremes. You can see the setup here, at the last magpul class Chris borrowed it for a while to create the Costa Cam:

I have it secured with a lanyard, as well as a little bit of shock cord to help angle the camera inwards to its lined up with my point of aim (my eyes I mean).

I will say, looking back through my footage, especially searching and assessing it creates some fast motion that about made me want to puke. Major motion sickness.
