I’m new to the AR-platform, so I apologize if I sound a bit naive. I am looking to add an ACE Skeleton Stock (ARFX - Full Length) to my Palmetto AR15.
Is the full length ACE stock compatible with a carbine length gas system? I’ve read a few threads with this question; however, there seems to be a bit of confusion/mixed reviews on the matter. Will I need to replace my buffer/spring, etc?
Recoil systems are independant of actual gas port location. Rifle recoil systems can be used on carbine length, mid length and rifle length gas sytems just fine as can carbine recoil systems be used on the aforementioned gas lengths as well if one desired.
As to whether or not you would need to ‘tune’ the recoil system (stronger/weaker spring and/or heavier/lighter buffer), that, as always, is going to be individual rifle and ammo dependant.
You’re mixing terminology, which is probably adding to your confusion. Gas system length refers to the distance from the gas block to the key on the BCG, in other words, the length of the gas tube.
There are three basic flavors: Rifle length, mid length, and carbine length, they are mostly determined by barrel length, and have nothing to do with what’s attached to the other end of the weapon. Equipped with the proper spring and buffer, fixed or collapsable buttstocks can be used with any length gas system.
Now, to your question, the Ace ARFX is a fixed length buttstock which utilizes the buffer tube as a structural member. You need a full-on A2 buffer tube, as well as a rifle length buffer and spring. Which spring depends on the actual gas system length of the AR in question.
So, can an ARFX be used with a “carbine length gas system”? Yes.
Can it be used with a carbine length buffer tube for an adjustable stock? No.
Ahhh, I see. I was aware of the different lengths, but my lack of experience and knowledge of terminology was what confused me. Thank you everyone for your help! Definitely cleared things up for me.
