AAR Defensive Concepts - Carbine Shooting on the Move 7 Nov

On 7 Nov Defensive Concepts North Carolina (DCNC) taught it’s Defensive Carbine - Shooting on the Move course in Carthage, NC. The weather was chilly in the morning but warmed to a comfortable point before noon.

The course began with introductions, discussion of safety, and the outlining of the established medical plan. The medical plan. For this course there were 6 students and 2 instructors. Half of the students were active duty military while the remaining students came from the emergency services and concerned citizen communities.

A quick skill test was conducted to see where everyone’s skill level was and then it was on to the course material.

The material began with forward movement. Body position, gait, when to fire, etc were all discussed and demo’ed. Students then conducted multiple dry-fire reps to ingrain the material prior to conducting any live-fire reps. After some live-fire reps were conducted, students were shown ways to combat the wobble they all experience when shooting on the move.

With this complete, students moved on to shooting while moving to the rear. Students displayed great accuracy during this block. No doubt this was due students starting closer to the target.

Next up was lateral movement. Students were shown two methods of lateral movement and spent a great deal of time drilling this material. A part of the lateral movement block included what to do in the event a threat presents itself after you have passed it’s position.

After lateral movement had been covered the students began to run drills on diagnal movement to the rear.

With diagnal movement completed a series of movement drills were conducted. Students went through the “U”, the “Snake”, and the “Box”.

The class concluded with the shooters moving through a series of rooms in a small shoothouse while engaging shoot and no-shoot targets. Shooters that failed to deal with the targets appropriately were told to run a lap around the range while chanting a cute phrase after their run was complete.

Guns used in the course included several ARs of various makes, an Arsenal AK chambered in 7.62x39, and a WASR-2 (5.45). The Arsenal expereinced several failures to feed that were traced back to a weak magazine spring. No malfunctions were encountered in the other guns. One shooter even shot the bulk of the course using a 22 Conversion kit with no problems (thanks to a healthy dose of lube).*
