A Working Man's Weaponlight - Two Surefire Substitute Experiments

Surefire LED helmet light? Tangodown makes a mount for it, that should win the lightweight category.

I have that light. But it is NOT a proper weapon light. The LEDs are the tiny LEDs that you get in those keychain lights. It is enough for general purpose and navigation. But as a force multiplier, it is not powerful enough. It doesnt have throw nor the brightness for tactical advantage.

Here is a pic I took when i got it.

I’m curious why people put a short-range flooder like that on their weapons. Any input? Surely when TD makes a mount there must be a segment of users who do just that.

Hey if someone will buy it that is all the excuse they need.

SF makes some with IR leds, so for stealthy black ops stuff maybe a general purpose nav light on a weapon is what they need. Im sure they have a primary weaponlight though, I cant see someone only having this as their main light.

Inside structures it is possible to have too much light. Also, when using NVG’s a little bit of white light, or even red light illumination goes a very long way.

Actually that is only partially true. LEDs dont really give off IR light. Unless they are IR LEDs. So if you have RED or WHITE leds, it wont do any good with NVGs. also the point of NVGs is to stay in the dark and see things in the dark without using visible light.

Wasn’t talking about IR illumination specifically . Red light throws shorter distances in the visible spectrum, this is why the military was all about red lens flashlights way back in the day; unless you are looking directly at it you can’t see it. Blue lighting provides better visibility on NVG’s which is why aircraft NVG cockpit lighting is blue. Under goggles a low intensity white light is startlingly bright to the user, a red light not so visible to others (low-tech bad guys) off of goggles, IR being invisible to all. A Surefire helmet light could be quite useful in this application.
