It would never happen, at least in the foreseeable future, but with the anniversary of Sandy Hook and the inevitable reignition of major gun control campaigns soon upon us, I was just wondering at what point all of you would be willing to support an actual compromise on firearms? You know, where both sides give something and both sides gain something.
Would you support Manchin-Toomey if also included removal of suppressors from the NFA? If not, how much farther would it have to go in order for you to support it? Would it require the elimination of the NFA entirely? Or would nation-wide concealed carry do it for you?
Just curious as to what everyone would consider a “compromise” that they feel they’d be giving and gaining in equal amounts and could support.
Why don’t we take a page from their book and just take and not give anything. Just call it common sense, bipartisan, blue-ribbon, low-fat, cage-free, consensus, BPA-free, for the children gun control.
Steyr- they would actually be smart to take your offer. It amazes me that they do silly things like mag restrictions and bayonet lug BS. Universal BGC is defacto registration. Once they have all the fun toys handed out to any idiot, just wait for them to screw up and they can say- we gave you all the toys and you guys didn’t play well with others. Start turning in machine guns then suppressors, then 50s, the mag fed autoloaders. They could pass that law now, but everyone would have lost their ARs on their last boating trip. They need to register them first and then start the nuttiness, especially after they pack all the courts, including SCOTUS.
I would support the removal of the SBR, SBS, & suppressor categories from the books in exchange for background checks on all firearm transfers. Hell, they could even keep them on the books, but eliminate the CLEO signoff requirement and I would be fine with it.
I said they could do a background check. I didn’t say the could collect make, model and serial number. The background check would be on the individual only and all they would know is “handgun, long gun or both” and that’s IT. And they could only retain the record of the check for 30 days. After all it’s only about making sure gun buyers are screened.
Suppressors should be regulated exactly like handguns, same process, nothing different.
All states should have reciprocity with each other, not exactly “constitutional” or “US” carry, but remove all restrictions that states apply to those who carry from other states.
Those are the only two changes I’d be content with (that and the fact I live in a free state that allows me to do whatever the **** I want)
As a compromise, I would like to see plasma pulse laser rifles (w/ stun, paralyze or lethal capability) available for purchase w/ gov. low interest financing to natural born US citizens over 21 yrs old for making it through this last 8 years of the most bizarre, dystopic events in dealing w/ all the Barking Moonbat idiots / Zombie’s out there of course assuming we do, provided they are not on SSRI’s, no current or past history of any mental issues, domestic violence, felons, incl. Bath Salts, krokodhil et al.
I would agree, on the conditions styer set and the immediate imprisonment and subsequent trial of all people who tried to violate the 2A(Bloomberg, Fienstine, Brady campaign, all the usual suspects, everyone of them). If we are going to compromise they need to go away for a long, long time to send the message of… You can’t get away with trying to take away rights. Period. And make it the law of ever state of the union.
That would be the only way I would even think about “compromise”.
Ill go back to reality now, because this would never happen.
Remove suppressors and short barreled rifles from the NFA.
Completely deregulate suppressors. Considering they drop the sound to safer levels, they actually make guns less dangerous. Absolutely no reason whatsoever to do a background check on a suppressor.
Also, while the government is busy squandering taxpayer dollars, they might use some of that money to update the NFA, hire more people to do the checks, and create an instant check system similar to the current NICS so that wait time is minutes rather than months.
I’ll give up background checks for private sales for all that. The truth is, I’ve noticed that many people do FFL transfers on private sales anyway in order to eliminate any future headaches. The issue with Manchin-Toomey for me, like most of you, the fact that once again we’re supposed to give and still get nothing in return. But I figure if we can get more than we give for once, I’ll take it.
You compromise on Taxes, you compromise on Zoning Regulations or the budget. You do not compromise on rights or freedoms. I often decry the lack of compromise in government. But there are some things you just don’t compromise on. PERIOD.
^THIS! If you start compromising you’ll always be comprising. It never ends. If they managed to take mags over ten rounds, what next? Semi-autos? Then what? Rifles with scopes now dubbed “sniper rifles”? It never ends. They’ll eat the elephant one bite at a time.
One of these days I’ll sit down and write up a wish list about this. I think given the right concessions a bill could be written that people like us could be happy with.
Universal Background checks + Firearms Freedom Act for every state + CCW reciprocity + remove suppressors from the NFA + shorten the SBR limit from 16" to 14" and SBS limit from 18" to 16" + allow modern machine guns into the NFA + severe penalties (felony-level) for the creation or storage of a firearms databse or records.
This means universal background checks on all firearms that enter the interstate stream of commerce, but not ones created in-state for use in-state.
The severe penalties portion would constitute a felony for any federal government employee or federal government contractor who creates a database (defined as a collection of data that consists of personal information of civilians and firearms owned or purchased by said civilians) or who knows of such a database but fails to report it to be destroyed or to destroy it themselves. A warrant issued by a judge would allow creation of a focused and temporary database for criminal investigations, but any persons and associated firearms on the list must be destroyed if they are not convicted of a felony. Another exception would be the NFA registry of MGs, SBRs/SBSs, AOWs, and DDs. A warrant would also be required for the ATF (or any agency) to look through the 4473s of a dealer.
I would support a 1800 number or web site available for all to use (private or FFL) that can run SSN for an instant check. Plug in SSN and get a name and approval code kind of like you do with a credit card swipe. Match the name to the ID the person is showing you and all sales MG, SBR, suppressor…go on. The transaction must be instant. Kill all other import and date code loonacy. The only information they get to keep is that ones SSN was run on XYZ day. They don’t need to know anything else. Also the burden of proof must be pushed back to innocent till proven guilty for ANY denial. Open appeals process for clearing up issues. No more secret lists and the like. If they screw you wrongfully it’s $10k penalty per swipe for a civil rights violation.
No gonna happen. Both side of the DC aisle want to sick us in the rear as hard and as fast as they can get away with.
14" So they get universal background checks so we can get two inches of muzzle length reduction (presumably, so we can own 14.5" AR15s because those are the only weapons that would be affected)? To be completely honest, the liberals would probably go for that!
With friends like you, who needs enemies? Re-read your post from the perspective of someone who has several 10.3" SBRs and has actually waited months and months and shelled out thousands of dollars in taxes for NFA items to be processed; then tell me how current privacy laws have stopped the NSA.
In the past, I’ve said I’m not willing to give an inch in anymore firearm restrictions. We aren’t giving up shit, we are repealing shit. That’s the compromise. I didn’t realize my metaphor wasn’t that far off from reality…as long as it was two inches.
