A quick question on a Build... help me out?

Hey gents, I am have been lurking this forum for a long time and learning a lot! This is my first post so I want to lay it out correctly…

I am putting together a build and came across a very nice deal, basically couldn’t pass it up even though it wasnt exactly what I wanted…

It went kind of like this…

New (no box) so I cant return the EL (see below)
Spikes Lower
Vltor MUR-1
Vltor Casv-el

$200.00 bucks…

With that said… the EL was not my choice in terms of rails system as I personally liked the casv-m… but, for the money, it made no sense not to get it.

I am basically putting together a run and gun, HD, type platform but, I do often times get wrapped up in aesthetics (don’t kill me for saying that). Long range shooting is not what this will be used for… I aleady have a very nice Compass Lake that is just a tac-driver!

So… with all that said, here is my issues/dilemma… I want a 16" Barrel, not a 14"… specifically I like the White Oak 16". I also want to go with a mid-gas system and would prefer to put the ARMS #41-B Folding Front Sight with Gas Block on it.

My questions is since I know that the EL is made for more of a carbine gas system and 14" barrel will this work?

I guess, in the worst case scenario, I will sell the EL for under retail and get the casv-m… or I can find a 14" barrel and get a carbine gas system…

BTW, even though I have read a lot of recommendations for skipping out on the casv systems… that is the look I want.

So… will what I laid out work (and look correct) or would you all advise me to do something else?

You got a MUR, CASV, and the lower for $200. Did I read that wrong?!

So basically the question you’re asking is will the EL work with a mid length barrel?

The el will not extend to the proper length on a mid length gas system equipped barrel. I would also advise you consider another front sight. Maybe having an FSB pinned?

Yep it’ll work but look funky.

As lethal dose said I would also go with another front sight. Pin a FSB or try Vltor’s front sight tower if you must have a flip up. That said bearing in mind you keep and use the other parts you stated.

So to follow up, if I use the 16" and can find a carbine gas system will it still look funny with the Arm sight??

If I use the vltor front that you pointed out with what I laid out will that look incorrect?

Last, will it just be easier to sell the el and get the casv m… I would rather ask then buy a crap load of incorrect parts or have this looking funny:).

I HIGHLY suggest getting a barrel with a PINNED FSB. Check ADCO… they have lots… probably even some WOA with sights pinned. If not, you tell them what you want and they WILL make it happen.

Of course, that’s using a carbine length gas system, which is what you need to do if you want to use that rail.

My other thought is why you would pay for a WOA SS barrel for the purposes you’ve laid out. A standard chrome lined CMV barrel would last longer for higher volume firing since you’ve stated that this is NOT supposed to be a precision gun.

No , you are right… I am just picky about the look of my rifles… I am now leaning more towards a 16" carbine forged daniel defense with the exact look of what you posted:)

Honestly bud I wouldn’t do anything right now. Research, research, research. Read the stickies on here. Ask some good questions and do some more research. Trust me your wallet will thank you later. You have no idea how much money I spent on rifles before I did some good RESEARCH and finally got it right. Save the hassle and get knowledge first. Read about barrels,bolts, gas systems, etc. Find out who makes good stuff. Who doesn’t. Take a class and rent a rifle. Good luck man and be patient…and stop worrying so much about looks. :wink:

I knew that was coming at some point… I am always patient, always reading, and always 100% before I actually buy… in the case of the receiver and rail system I was not but, given the price point… I had to do it.

Now, I will build off that… I understand I shouldn’t worry about looks but, its just in me to do that… We all have certain things and thats mine… Not to sound like to much of an ass, I would rather put things on that my head tells me are “the best” and not have buyer remorse than buy what makes most sense and second guess it.

Im sure that makes sense on some level to you. And… since I am not planning on building very many of these (I am just a handgun guy) I would rather personally be happy with it opposed to other people say… oh man, you spent to much for things you dont need… because truthfully, I don’t need any of this, I just want it as I am super intrigued by it:)

I will say this… I do shoot 2-4 times per week, half indoor/half outdoor… so I am a very good shot, just not knowledgeable on everything based around the AR yet… 10/22 is a different story! LOL

I just wanted to say, thanks for all the input here and I will eventually post pics and specs once I go through with everything… it may be a few months though as I do plan on reading more before I buy anymore stuff!
