Alright I hope this post isn’t as confusing as it sounds in my head.
I purchased a Scoutlight 600A a couple days ago for a pretty good price. It worked ok but I was worried about the battery life so I looked into the better LED head. Upon comparison I found that I could get a E2D for the same price at my LGS. I picked one up the light and swapped the head out. If course I now have a much brighter light with better throw and even with the old LED head on it the E2D makes a passable flashlight.
Ok Everyone still with me?
I have started to wonder what if any difference there is between the Scout light and the E2D. Weight seems about the same. The scout light has a built in mount however I would prefer an offset mount. I have also noticed that sometimes when I activate the tape switch, the light comes on the dimmer setting. So this leads me to my questions.
1: Why does the light sometimes come on dimmer? This seems to mainly happen when I let off the switch and press it again quickly.
2: Does anyone make an offset mount for the E2D like the VLTOR offset scout mount?
3: are there any differences between the scout light and the E2D that I am missing here?
I think I can answer your first question. Got this from surefire.com
Surefire E2D LED
Two-stage tailcap switch: press for momentary-on at high setting, release and press again (within two seconds) for momentary-on at low setting; click for constant-on at high-setting, click off and click on again (within two seconds) for constant-on at low setting.
The E2D is a good light. The LED KX2C upgrade from Surefire works well, even as a 2-stage, but is pricey. I like the incan bulb better for the single stage.
Vltor makes an offset mount, as does Larue. There is an E2D in an offset mount on the front page of Larue’s site, if you want to see what it looks like mounted.
Viking Tactics has joined forces with Surefire in the development of the VTAC-L4 Light. This light was designed to fill the void between a Scout Light and other Executive Series Surefire Lights. The VTAC-L4 Light has a KX2C 120 lumen output head with a Z59 Scout light tailcap.
This light is intended to be used in conjunction with the VTAC Light Mount, this configuration gives the shooter the ability to have a low-profile light on their rifle with a focused beam that allows for better target discrimination at extended distances. The tailcap will keep the shooter from having white light AD’s, yet is user friendly for normal use or one handed weapon operation.
Max Lumens: 120 • Hours Useful Runtime: 76 • (This light is packaged in a E2D box.)
The E2DL uses a KX2C, just reprogrammed to have a low mode. It is the exact same emitter, optic, and high drive level as the M600 or KX2C replacement head. I was lucky enough to buy an E2DL back when it was single stage (high only) - so I have a KX2C head with the strike bezel that won’t ever switch into low mode.
I LOVE that VTAC setup - it is by far one of the best buys I’ve seen. You get a fantastic light that you can carry if you want (or need) to, and a good solid mount, all for a damn good price (compared to the dedicated Surefire weaponlight with the same LED head).
I just ordered the VTAC. im a surefire nut. and wow I like the semi-rare OEM Surefires. I have a Strider M2 with matching Strider knife and I have a Taurus C2.
now I will have a viking tactics.
for those who got it already, is the black HA the same as the E2DL? or is it HAII like a normal 6P?
The LX2 has been out for over a month now… get with the times!
=P
Unfortunately, it does not have the same body diameter as an E series light. I believe the A2L and LX2 are somewhere in the .9 inch range - just barely between an E series and C/P series light.
My surefire E2 lights were in the .82" range, my LX2 is .83-.86" or so, with all the fluting on the LX2, it’s hard to read.
The neat thing with the LX2 is that the 2 stage part is in the tailcap. The head can be interchanged with other E series heads to give them two stages if you want. Works will with KL4 and KX2C heads. Plus my LX2 head works well on a scoutlight.
I’d say just get the VTAC light/combo. The way I see it, it’s a great deal for a good bright hand held light and a mount. It’s a good light weight option, and only what, 160-170$
If and when the M952V comes out, you can upgrade to a more expensive and heavier light if you want, which would give you IR. Plus, you’d still have an extra light and mount with the VTAC combo.
I would recommend the VTAC light as well. it is basically an inexpensive handheld version of a scout light. the only difference is that the scoutlight has a mount on the body and comes with the UE07 tape switch. Buy the VTAC mount with the light. even if you want the UEO7 remote tape switch, that is only an additional $101.
$101+$170 (light and mount) = $271. A M600C scout light is $425.
I too would recommend the M952V when and if it comes out. I have a M952XM. I can just get the KM3 bezel and it is compatible with my weaponlight body. If you get the M952V, you just need a Lu60 adapter and a 6P/M2 style head and you can use Malkoff dropins or any other LED or incandescent lamp you want.
Surefires are like Legos. the more you buy, the more you can swap parts around and build combinations.
The Viking tactics head is the KX2C. Same as a scoutlight. It is LED It is single stage. He E2D is an incandescent so it doesn’t compare. The E2DL is dual stage. However there is a possibility of the E2DL to switch modes while firing multiple rounds. If you were to weapon mount the E2DL.
Yes. all of surefire parts are compatible. Any surefire scoutlight part will fit the VTAC. However I should point out that the LU60A is not necessarily for “outside operations”
The LU60A allows you to use a C-series style head. For example the M2 shock isolating head. this goes in conjunction with an incandescent bulb.
The KX2C that comes with the VTAC light has a gread beam. good for throw. Throw is the ability of the flashlight to literally throw the light forward. the more throw, the more you can see down range.
This is particularly the case with KT4 style head. the M4 dedicated surefire lights use these.
Anyway the Lu60A has another benefit over an LED. You can use an IR filter and have “invisible” light.
However the LU60A may be replaced by the KM3. The KM3 is the head for the Vampire light. It has a strong IR LED and bright white. you may be able to use the LU60A adapter and mount the KM3.
