A little help on this MP5 clone

I’ll be able to get you a picture and a review within a week or two. I bought THIS German kit from HKPARTS.NET along with an LSC flat for him to work up for me. He’s making it into a pistol that I will SBR as soon as possible. All said and done, I’ll be about $2400 into it.

Honestly, I’m doing this simply because I’ve always wanted one. It’ll be a shooter for sure, but it’s probably never going to be my primary run. I had some (not $5k) extra cash laying around and thought what the hell. After seeing some of Chopstix Kid’s other work, I’m optimistic that it’ll be a great build.

Go get your Die Hard on.

Worst part about getting your Die Hard on is getting the packing tape off your back whilst maintaining your back hair!!

what is the cost of assembly? Based on the parts kits my estimate is about $600. This seems reasonable. I’ve been considering an hk project. What’s the best value on parts? I’m not concerned with getting as many German parts as possible, I just want a reliable shooter that’s put together correctly.

That’s a good point. My Ar is my go to gun and I doubt I would ever use a 9mm carbine for anything but punching holes in paper.

Have you shot yours yet? Any problems?

Thinking a bit more about it, there’s probably a few extra’s that weren’t included in that number. Had to buy a few $30 parts to make it semiauto, a butt plate, and shipping. Tack on another $250-300 or so. Again, this one is all about fun for me, not something I’ll be shooting in a class… at least to start with.

I have a friend that built a MP5 40 clone and made the mistake of using a SW trunnion. It ran like a raped ape for about 1500 rounds then the bolt gap dropped out of it. Because the SW trunnion was to soft its not up to spec. Its now getting rebuilt to replace the trunnion. There are multiple threads at HKpro about Coharie last I heard the bolt heads are cast but worst yet they are not dimensionally correct and replacing the parts with HK parts may or may not work depending on how the barrel was set in the trunnion. If it was set to cover up the out of spec parts you put in spec parts in it and the bolt gap is not right. Then you just end up chasing your tail.

Prime example: http://hkpro.com/forum/showthread.php?104620-Too-much-Bolt-Gap-.027-quot-with-HK-Bolt

The roller delayed system depends on having in spec parts this also includes the trunnion because it is part of the operating system it does more than locking the bolt and holding the barrel.

Trust me I want to get my Die-Hard on too after shooting that MP5 40

Yeah, I may have been in error and thinking about those stupid assault pistol regs we used to have.

And that is kinda my point. If PTR can miss even with FMP presses and tooling, how hard do you imagine it is for the basic shop gunsmith who doesn’t have the tooling?

I have seen POF A3 stocks and they are indeed crap, the only one worse was the US made A3 stock I once saw. What it comes down to is this.

A MKE receiver is better and closer than any US receiver I’ve ever seen. From there you need a legal combination of US and imported parts. Most of us use US parts that have a negligible impact on reliable function. You can swap the remaining MKE parts for German parts if you wish.

That is all I’m saying.

Steyr,

If I get the AT94P, can I put any butt stock on it? Or is there a specific butt stock that will only fit the AT?

Thanks in advance

Nothing is going to compare to the original. But a quality gunsmith can take a decent flat and make it into a quality product. Will it be as good as a German original?..No. It’s the fine details and touches that can make or break the gun in the HK clone world. I’m doubting they are going that extra mile in Turkey or Pakistan, but who knows.

You can put any regular MP5 buttstock on the AT94P. The only thing you can’t put in there is a full auto bolt carrier group without some modification, which is a moot point if you don’t have 10k+ to drop on a sear, or whatever they cost now.

Get the mke built on hk tooling. Even if you think the welds and finish look like crap, it’s probably cheaper to have the mke cleaned up by someone who knows what they’re doing like AZEX or IGF than to buy a kit-build.

Factory guns are always going to retain their value more than a kitbuild.

Factory stock will fit with no modifications. However, you must satisfy 922r compliance to be legal.

But what I’m saying is this.

Who can get closer to HK spec?

A HK contract factory set up by HK?

Or a US gunsmith who doesn’t have factory tooling?

What else do I need to make it compliant? Sorry for the noobie questions and I appreciate you helping me.

thanks

You must use enough US parts to make it a domestic carbine. Which parts you choose to replace is up to you. Most people prefer parts which are not critical to function such as furniture and things like that.

Your best bet is to pop over to HKPro and ask which parts most people use to make the MKE pistol compliant.

HKParts.net will carry most US made parts you might want. You can also call Adam Weber directly and ask him about which compliant parts he’d recommend. He’s pretty knowledgeable and helpful.

…and you have to get one fast since the 94P is no longer allowed to be imported.

Says who?

ATI. The importer.

Do you have a source saying the ATF ruled the AT94P un-importable?

I get the cliff-notes version from ATI. I’ll ask them specifics when I meet with them in NY next week.

I was told that ATF “flipped the script” and said “No-No” to future imports of the 94P and the carbine. The last shipment was…the last.

The 94K is still allowed to be imported.

I had them send me a few for SBR-ing down the road.
