In a E-mail from the Buckeye Firearms Assocation www.buckeyefirearms.org Montpelier OH school board announced that they will arm staff… this will be teachers, adminstrators, etc, not an outside hired firm… follow the link for the article on the page, it’s towards the bottom of the page…
See how that goes, couldn’t picture some of my past teachers fumbling around with a firearm.
First time some dummkopf has a ND in a school (and especially if somebody gets hurt), it’s all over at least in that school. We have to save the children!
I’m all for the idea of having some armed school staff, but it’s just a political issue that the left is going to jump all over to “prove” it doesn’t work. Even if the numbers would demonstrate that it does work on a large scale.
Throwing guns at a situation is no better than taking guns away… WITHOUT TRAINING.
Concealed carry training in most states is pretty pathetic.
I totally agree,
There needs to be a national standard of training for those who wish to be armed in the schools.
While CCW training is’nt generally very good…if any of you followed the link, you’d would’ve seen, on the same page, how the Buckeye Firearms assc has also offered free 3-day training classes, for teachers, adminstrators they had 24 slots open, they got over 1000 applicants…At least we’re trying to do something…What are you doing about it other than bitching?
With that last qualification I agree.
There are several factors unique to a school environment that need to be specifically addressed by a knowledgeable person.
Who’s bitching? It’s called pointing out a potential detriment to the overall cause and hoping that if someone from there is reading this, to take it into account. Without proper training, they may just shoot themselves and the cause in the foot.
Oh, and by training, I mean more, as in a SHIT TON more than 3 days. You cannot become proficient on a square range in 3 days let alone when the excrement hits the oscillator.
ETA - Oh, and I’ve written a letter a week to my Reps and have encouraged 20 (15 confirmed) others to write in. Discussions at the school board were not allowed this month due to other “pressing issues”. So… you know… I just sit around bitching.
Hillsborough County in Florida (Tampa) is hiring 150 new school guards. Not sure if they are going to be sworn or not though. But they are to be hired throught the Sheriff’s office.
I agree 3 days is’nt much but then again how much does the average police recruit get before he’s put out on the street? Training is only a start…It’s up to the indvidual to practice and stay proficient, I see what they’re doing as a start…after all, you have to start somewhere… A free 3-day class, all ammo provided, and handguns provided to those who don’t own one, and if I’m not mistaken lodging provided as well, is a good start. Probably better than anybody else’s. And yes, I just sent one of my house reps another letter, probably the 5th one in the last 4 days…Just so you also know, I too, just sit around bitching…
My department 35 days on the range while in the Academy last I heard.
Well, that’s great, My point is, what these people are doing is a start, They(the teachers) can take notes while they’re there, and practice when they’re home. Hopefully, some will take it seriously enough to take more classes when they’re off during the summer. If they do that, they should be fairly proficent in about 6 months to a year. But again, you have to start somewhere, and I’d rather see the teachers take a 3 day class, and start learning now, rather than be another victim later… Hopefully, other instructors across the country will offer their services (possibly for a reduced fee) for teachers willing to learn… I think we can all agree the “Gun-Free Zone” signs aren’t working… The fact that teachers, and school boards are finally starting to admit hiding in a closet is’nt much of a plan, is something we should capitialize on.
