I was asked to take a look at a well worn Colt 9mm SMG that had some cycling/function issues and the handguard was spinning. I removed the handguard to find that that barrel nut had backed itself off a good half-dozen full turns, giving a whole new definition to “free floated barrel”. An easy enough fix but a good illustration of the multiple functions a part as simple as a gas tube fills on the original design.
Agreed SCatalyst - really like the idea of a 9 or .40 AR using my existing Glock magazines with a can and a T1 on top. Always wished Glock would make pistol AR’s now Double Diamond and Lone Wolf beat them to the punch.
Question where are the top tier pistol AR Uppers in 9 and 40 found? I checked BCM’s site but didn’t see any available.
Seriously. It’s alway the little things that help. I wonder how many rounds it took to get that loose?
Funny thing is, FBI bought up a contract with RRA in 2009 for their LAR-40, and I think they still hold it. It was to make training cheaper or keep their caliber count low or whatever.
Word on the street all agents have a mandatory carry of their issued Glock 22s (40S&W). Someone in purchases must be upset now that there’s an AR lower that will accept their Glock magazines. But instead the FBI are buying proprietary magazines from RRA for the stack of LAR-40s they now have. I think I read on another forum that their magazines are having problems. Heresay for now.
I think the magazine issue is one of the reasons LW and DDLES came out with their lowers when they did. Not only to appeal to the Glock community but also for a potential future contract that would allow the FBI (or any agency) to retain their pistol caliber upper (most expensive) and ditch the RRA lower/problematic proprietary mag route (least expensive). Then fall in contract love with either LW or DDLES with magazines that they already have a grip of. Yeah, some smart folks at Double Diamond and LW…if that’s what they’re after.
Rambling, anyways. I’m not sure if there is a top tier 9mm/40S&W upper. If you can get a hold of or order a LAR-40 upper (and survive the wait time), that would be pretty cool. But as long as the upper’s inside measurments are MIL-SPEC and at the take down, the tier is what you call it.
Just my .02.
I’m still contemplating which upper myself.
It was an old SMG from the late '90s,tens of thousands of rounds I’m sure. They sent it back for overhaul/replacement in the hopes it would transform into a 10.5" 5.56 with a flat top upper with a RDS on the return trip.
If you’re not willing to wait for a LAR40. You can go DI or blowback.
If you want blowback, DDLES has 40S&W bolts and upper of your choice.
If you want a DI, I would contact RMW Xtreme or Mad Machinist.
What magazine issue? Using glock magazines?
Possibly not exactly what you’re asking, but anyhow… My Colt 6450 runs quite well with the Colt (metalforms), CProducts and Pro mags. I like the Colt mags (1998) the best, but the others run…
I like the carbine so well that I’m considering getting a flat top… Ron
No, I was refering to the rumored problematic proprietary magazines for the RRA LAR-40.
The DDLES Glock lowers look promising.
SO…What happened to all those RRA LAR-40’s the FBI purchased?
Who was the idiot that thought it was a good idea to waste tax payer funds on this project?
Did anyone get fired over this?
Here is my Colt 9mm lower mated to an 9mm RRA upper. Shoots like a dream. OEM Colt barrel is shown to compare the 16" to the 10.5" barrel. Got my stamp 6 months to the day it went pending.
Original Colt was a late green label, pre-1994 w/sear block. It was law enforcement, but not stamped as LE b/ c it was just before the AWB of '94, so I have been told. Source was very reliable.
