I’m having a key holing issue with my 9mm reloads through my Browning FM Hi-Power. I using a 124 gr RN cast lead with Unique powder (forgot the grain charge but it isn’t maximum or close to minimum). I have noticed, thanks to my press, that I have a good size crimp on my casings. Could this cause it? I have the Dilion 650 and it is a pain to set the crimp. I have it to were the die actual has to be all the way down passed the threads to even get a crimp, yet I get a massive one when I do this. :suicide:
What’s the measurement of your crimp? It sounds like either you have an improperly made die or your adjustment for the taper crimp is WAY off. I’ve got approximately 2 threads showing on my 9mm crimp die on my 650.
In short…none. I bury it in order to get a crimp. Might need to get a new. Lee die, BTW.
So putting a loaded round in a set of dial calipers to actually measure how much crimp you’re applying is out of the question?
What measurements do i need to look for? First time hearing I need to measure the crimp.
You need to slug your barrel then cast /size your bullets to be .002" grove dia. Probably a .357" dia bullet will be good. A slight taper crimp is all thats needed over crimping cast bullets is never a good idea, just enough to prevent setback!![]()
Measure the diameter of the case mouth after you have seated a bullet and applied your crimp. Then post that measurement.
Which reloading manuals are you using? No offense, but it seems that you’re new to reloading and flying by the seat of your pants which can be dangerous. It almost sounds as if you’re looking for some form of roll crimp rather than a taper crimp. Pictures of your loaded rounds that you’re having problems with would be helpful in helping you resolve your issue safely.
