I’ve read this board for the immense amount of great info over the years and finally joined last year. Until now, I haven’t had anything to offer in return. After scouring this board and the net for answers to some minor nagging questions, I was able to actually give some advice and help my Dad out with an optic for his recently acquired LE-901 from Clyde’s. The first observation he mentioned after picking up the 901 was how much heavier it was than his 6940. With limiting the additional weight of an optic as a big consideration, and since he doesn’t shoot as much as he’d like to (maybe more so now that he’s fully retired) I recommended an ACOG. I have a TA-33G-H and love it for my limited skills, eye relief, and as a rugged compromise optic with respect to cost and expected use. With this in mind, it became the baseline for what I thought would be best for his situation. After getting in the weeds with respect to barrel lengths, BC’s, velocities and bullet weights – still with some unanswered questions - I emailed Trijicon. I received a recommendation (last on list) and a very nice chart from Jenni – with permission to share - below:
MODEL CALIBER BULLET WEIGHT MUZZLE VELOCITY
TA11C 308 168 2925
TA11E 308 175 2651
TA11H-308 308 147 2810
TA33-9 308 146 2651
TA33-12 308 168 2650
Since it isn’t very green where my Dad lives, I decided to go with Jenni’s recommendation in green and pick up the TA-33G-12 (since he claims he’s blowing my inheritance I figured on him shooting 168gr match). Of course the manual was the same as my TA-33 – none of which illustrate the circle dot or crosshair BDC – so I wanted to actually be sure what all of the markings meant, especially the actual 100m zero and 200m mark. Below is what was sent to me (slightly modified due to not all of the text transferring). Additionally, I’ve added the modified BDC from the TA-33G-12 copied from the Trijicon site identical to that in my possession – green with an 800m BDC mark. I remember reading on few boards and in discussions with a few friends similar questions so I hope they help a little and can add to the library of information.
Actual TA-33G-12 as picked up:
I figure the 901 at 9.4lbs plus the ACOG at .73lbs (11.64oz) = 10.13lbs can be handled by a man who has dreamed of an M-14/M-1A since I was a kid, but never pulled the trigger.
