870P Ext mag tube clamp issue (Now with pictures)

I’ve got an 870P with an 18.5" barrel (the specs and box call it 18" but it measures 18.5 and is 1/2 inch longer than my other 18 incher). I just bought a Remington brand plus 2 mag tube extention with Remington brand barrel clamp (the one with a sling stud). The extention is the parkerized model.

The problem is that the clamp pushes the barrel and magazine tube extention apart to the point where there is an internal gap inside the extention joint which causes the spring to bind. It’s visually obvious too that the barrel and tube are being forced apart.

I searched and found some very old info online which alludes to there being two different clamp models, one of which may be marked with an X.

Anyone know anything about this. I tried to contact Remington today via phone but ran out of time. The parts are from the LE Division but the support there seems more geared to agency reps, not individuals. Any help is appreciated.

Can you post a picture of what you’re talking about. I’ve fought with some issues and solved them with the extension, but I’m not sure exactly what you mean.

Please post a pic…

The Remington mag clamps are PIA. Several companies make better looking and performing aftermarket clamps.

Don’t really know if this helps. But, I have a new production (year or so old) 870P. The barrel clamp fits right and the clamp does have an “x” marked on it.

jimmyB62,

I sent you a PM, I may be able to help resolve the problem.

Jimmy,

I had the exact problem you describe. Even though the extension and clamp(non-“x”) were factory Remington parts(ordered from Brownells), the clamp did not fit well which forced the barrell and extension too far apart and put a great deal of stress on the extension. Not to mention it looked odd.

Call Remington, request a clamp with a swivel for a 12 guage two shot extension and they will send you the correct part. And yes, it will have an “X” stamped into one side of it. As I recall, it’s an expensive “X”; $28 or so I think, but that was almost two years ago.

Thanks for the help all. As others have stated there are two different clamps with slightly different offsets. The x-marked clamp is the correct one for the current 870P with current two shot Remington extention. I don’t know what the non x-marked clamp fits or is supposed to fit.

The reps I talked to at Remington were not aware of any differences and in general were not much help. They would not let me send in the clamp for inspection and their only remedy was for me to contact the seller (Brownells) for a refund/exchange.

When I can I will post pics of the two different clamps (it may be a bit).

rkb3119,

I got your PM and sent an email but it may have got lost in your spam filter. I’m still interested in hearing from you.

I finally have both clamps and took pictures to show the difference. The X-marked clamp is designed to work with the now standard 18.5" barrels. The non-X clamp works with 18" barrels. I verified this on two different receivers swapping between the 18 and 18.5" barrels on both. As a side note, my 870P which shipped with an 18.5" barrel, was marked as only 18" on the box.

Glad you got it solved.

Gee, I’m having the opposite problem with a Wingmaster Magnum that I have shortened to 18.5 and have a 2rnd blue extension.

Lower part fits extension fine, the upper part of the clamp doesn’t seem to be tall enough to fit the barrel properly.

It works fine with an express barrel on the same shotgun, but not with the original VR barrel.

Anyone have a source for the unmarked/taller clamps?

Thanks, great thread
Billy

Billy - If you are still looking for a mag tube clamp for your 870 check out - aiptactical.com - This guy is a certified rem 870 armorer.
I have just been through the same thing you are asking about, seems as big green used two different standoff heights on their barrels at the mag tube ring. I am converting a older wingmaster to a pd/hd shotgun, and found this bit of info when I ordered a blued 2-rnd mag tube extension from him.
The guy’s name is J.D. McGuire, really knows thr 870’s. He should be able to help you.
Hope this helps LR

There is also an option for a magpul clamp…very well made, but didn’t work with the barrel/factory extension i had.
