7x57 Mauser

Anyone shoot these anymore? I read very little on them through the site’s search feature… mostly someone mentioned it here or there about killing elephants and being obsolete/niche amunition… not what I’m looking for.

Is this a good/accurate rifle round for, say, 500m and out? I plan on trying it out, but just looking for some experience with the round before buying a bunch more ammo… and yes, I already have the rifle… Dad gave it to me a few weeks back. Has an old Weaver 2.5-9x30 or 32 scope on it… looks like fun! Not sure if it holds any value at all, but it does look nice, and Dad mde the stock himself, so it’ll never be sold.

Thanks guys!

Depending upon what you want to do with it…the 7X57 is a very nice round. It can be very accurate and has the power to take small to medium sized game.

I have read the stories about Professional Hunters in Africa taking elephants with it too…but I have also read stories about people killing Grizzly Bears with a .22 LR.

There are still an awful lot of rifles chambered in the 7mm Mauser…but ammo can be hard to find for it.

Which Mauser is it?

There are quite a few in 7x57. I have a Chilean 1895 that I have yet to shoot. Beautifully made but I just haven’t bought ammo for it yet.

Although it is an old round, 7X57 mauser is a great round that is very versatile for a wide variety of game. Ballistics are close to .308/7.62 NATO. Ammo availability is still pretty good online although you may have challenges finding this round at your local sporting goods store or gun shop.

The same! Except for the stock that Dad made a long time ago… lol.

I definately didn’t find any rounds at my local Dunham’s Sporting Goods, or Dick’s, but haven’t really looked online for ammo as of yet.

I’m glad to hear it’s a decent round. I can’t wait to try it out…

I’ll take it the same day I take the new .220-Swift out for a spin, IF I can find the 7x57 ammo reasonably priced… I found one box of .220’s at Dunham’s yesterday.

Thanks for the info! Very helpful! And no, I’m not planning a Safari Hunt with it.

are they easy to find?

I had one, years ago. A Spanish Mauser carbine. Very handy little gun. Ammo was hard to find so I sold it.

The man famous for killing elephants with the .275 Rigby was Walter D.M. Bell, also known as Karamojo Bell. According to one article, he killed 1011 elephants with this cartridge firing a 173 gr FMJ at 2300 fps. He also shot 300 elephants with a Mannlicher-Schoenauer 6.5x54mm carbine using the long 159 grain FMJ bullets.

The .275 Rigby is the British designation for the 7x57 Mauser.

Factory ammo is loaded to pressures safe in Mauser 93 & 95 actions. In a modern action such as the Ruger M77, it can be handloaded to modern pressures and achieve performance that falls squarely between the 7mm-08 and the 280 Remington.

The 7x57 is an excellent caliber. My mom had a custom 98 Mauser in that caliber and it was a delight to shoot. My theory why it and all other calibers based on this case (8x57 Mauser, 6mm Remington & 257 Roberts) is because American bolt actions normally come in two lengths: Short for calibers based on the 308 case, and long for those based on the '06 case. Calibers based on the 57mm case are generally too long for short actions.

Last I checked (which was about three years ago), Remington made ammo for the 7x57 which is loaded to pressures suitable for the 95 Chilean Mauser. A good bullet weight is the 140 gr

I own a Brazilian 7x57 mauser that is stunning to look at, and as accurate as a rifle can get. I’ve not shot it beyong 200 yards so I don’t know how well it’ll shoot way out there but I suspect it’ll do equaly well.

I reload so I also shoot 6.5x55 Swedes and CZs, 7.5x55 Swiss, and 8mm mausers (Yogo and German). They all do very-very well once you establish what load each rifle likes. All these milsurp rifles in my opinion are better made than anything produced today but they tend to be heavy.

Here’s the two Swedes

And 3 of my many Swiss K31s

I sporterized this one for hunting and it’s a tackdriver!

Nice guns ^above^.

I’m still having trouble finding ammo for it, I’m guessing I’ll have to find some online if I want to shoot it. (Accepting donations!) :haha:

Thanks for the great info guys, I feel like you have all officially contributed to the site, lol. The only reason I brought it up was because I didn’t find hardly ANYTHING through the search feature.
