IIRC it was Elmer Keith who wrote about someone who took an example of every big game species in N America with a .357 Magnum.

I personally feel that 7mm-08 is a better cartridge than 308. But the 7mm-08 requires a handloader to even achieve the same level of versatility and cost that the 308 enjoys in factory ammo.
Plus, IIRC, the research and study that led to the development of the 6.8mm SPC and the 7x46mm found that the 7mm bullets tested tended to lead to more “devastating” terminal performance (while 6.5mm bullets had the greatest accuracy, and the developers of the 6.8mm opting to split the difference).

Back when I was a wee lad, the .270 was considered the “be-all” as a Texas deer slayer. Lighter to carry, shot nice and flat out in the desert, and did not destroy a lot of venison.
I think the 7mm-08 is just an updated and better version of that quest. I’m working towards a Remington Model 7 KS (Kevlar stock) in 7mm-08, and a nice piece of glass. I have to finish two other rifle projects first, but that will be my deer gun when I retire in a couple of years.
