70 grain "brown tip" available stateside?

Just wondering if the 70gr Barnes/optimized loaded by Black Hills for the military is available to us back home?
Have seen mention of the round in a number of places but cannot find a definitive answer.

I don’t think that’s available through normal channels. Not sure who else is loading it other than Asym Ammunition:

Stan Chen’s ammo is top notch.

There is also this;

The loadings listed are using the 70gr tsx, brown tip has a brown plastic tip. I’m also not sure the brown tips construction has been confirmed. Some say it is a tsx with brown tip others have stated that it is RRLP with a brown tip. Both bullets being made by Barnes.

If anybody has any info on where to pick up some true brown tip please pass the info on to me. If you show me where to purchase it i will make it worth your time.

any more info on this.

I had some 556 seconds out of Oregon, Tactical ammunition I think, that did have Brown Tipped ammo in it. At the time I did not know what it was

If you’re going drop a ton of cash on ammo you better do your research first. Real 5.56 optimized is a 70gr TSX with a PAINTED brown tip loaded to 5.56 pressures.

Where did you get you info ref the plastic tip? None of the .mil ammo I have seen has a plastic tip, it’s all obviously a Barnes style HP tip with brown paint on the end.
I also understand from talking to guys like Doc that you can’t use plastic parts in .mil ammo due to concerns that it doesn’t show up on X-rays. I recall a special version of the Federal EFMJ in which barium (IIRC) was used in the plastic part of that round so that the plastic would be radio opaque.

I think the OP is confusing the 5.56 70 grain optimized cartridge with the M855A1 although neither cartridge has a plastic tip.

5.56 Optimized with 70 Grain Barnes Bullet

M855A1 with steel penetrator insert/tip

I was thinking of brown tip when i said plastic i was just not being specific enough. Most tipped ammo has polycarbonate tip.

I was under the impression the brown tip actually had a tip that would help to iniate expansion.

All the pics i have seen looked like they had a tip inserted similar to other ballistic tip ammo. It just looked like a flat tip instead of pointed.

Thanks for the clarification that it is painted just like the m855.

Thank you for your service nightvisionary!!! Tpd223, viscouscb, and nightvisionary thank you for letting me know that none have poly tips. If Tpd and viscous also served i would like to thank you for you service as well if you did not serve thanks for the info.

Now i know i can just purchase some 556 pressure 70gr tsx.

I load it myself i just don’t get very good accuracy at 556 pressure. If i bring down the velocity accuracy is great.

I would like to have some for testing to see what accuracy i can get from a 556 pressure loading and if it is better than my attempts im going to try to pull a couple rounds and se if i can reverse engineer it.

Anyone else keep 5.56 70gr tsx, 62 tsx, 55or 50gr tsx in stock with 500 round case pricing?

You may want to e-mail Silver State Armory to see if they offer a discounted price for 500 of their 70gr tsx round.
