I want a AR chambered in 30 caliber. Obviously the best choice would be the 7.62x51. However if you are engaging targets out to a maximum of 500m why wouldnt a 7.62x39 work? With the right round choice the bullet will still be super sonic, so I would assume it should be still accurate. Is this a safe assumption?
I watched a guy shoot a ragged hole with a 7.62x39 AR, but that was at 50 yards, and he said the accuracy out to 200 meters was good.
What would yalls thoughts be of a 7.62x39 AR with a 18" barrel and rifle length gas system?
I guess the biggest challenge would be getting a quality bolt assembly and getting feed ramps that will feed the 7.62x39 bullet.
Mainly for the economic impact on my bank account. Being able to use 1 lower and the fact that 1k rounds of brass 7.62x39 surplus can be had for under 200 bucks is really nice.
I really like the fact I could use the same lower for my 556 and 545 upper and 7.62x39 if I chose to get one.
If you are a handloader, you may want to look at the 6.5 Grendel. With the Hornady brass coming out it may actually not cost “an arm and a leg” to reload. With a 20" barrel, or longer, 600 yards is easy.
In fact my 16" AA Upper puts them in less that 2" at 200 yards. Shot a deer at 83 long steps… 120gr Barnes TTSX reload…one shot one kill point of aim. The deer dropped on the spot.
If you decide to shoot Wolf make sure it is the 120gr and NOT the 123gr bullet.
