I bought a DPMS barrel labeled 7.62x51 which I know can fire both .308 and 7.62 NATO rounds but my question is which round will shoot better.
The only way to find out what your rifle shoots best is to go out & shoot it
not necessarly the case but the loads you are using…bullet weight and powder combinations…as long as the cases are properly sized it shouldnt make a huge difference…
.308
Virtually nothing made for the commercial market is actually 7.62 NATO.

Forgive the ignorance but What’s the difference between the two? Case pressure only or is there other small differences like in .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO?
Good info. Thanks for that.
So if I read it right, the .308 Win/7.62X51 relationship is kind of opposite the 5.55x45/.223 Rem. In as much as you can use 7.62X51 in a .308 caliber weapon but you can’t use .308 Win ammo in a 7.62X51 chambered weapon.

It’s not quite opposite. The dimensions for the 7.62x51 chamber is more generous which means commercial ammo won’t make as much pressure when used in it. It also means that 7.62x51 spec ammo will make more pressure in a commercial 308 chamber than it will in the 7.62x51 chamber.
I have never heard of anyone having pressure problems shooting commercial 308 ammo in a 7.62x51 chamber
There are small case dimension differences. I stick with .308.
To simplify, as the link below you indicated, headspacing.
Thanks for all the info fellows. I never got into shooting much .308 Win. although I have lovingly fondled an M1A Springfield a few times.
