6920 firing upon release of trigger, thoughts?

My brother has just informed me that his colt 6920 fires when trigger is pulled, and then fires a second round every time the trigger is RELEASED. I haven’t made it by to inspect it yet, but wanted to get some input from you guys before I do so. He has never taken the fcg apart, nor has he ever taken any of it apart. It’s a very low round count 6920. Purchased a few years ago. He’s fired the gun a few times in the past with no issues, but this last tome at the range the gun suddenly developed the problem. At first he thought gun was double firing, but he has confirmed that gun is actually firing one round off when trigger is pulled, and then a second round is fired upon RELEASE of the trigger. Thoughts?

It’s a bone stock 6920. No mods or accessories etc.

I have seen that in my agency’s (low round count) Bushmaster & DPMS rifles numerous times. I also saw it with OLD DRMO rifles that appeared to have high round counts. It ceased when I replaced the fcg with Colt or FN parts. Amazingly enough, I’ve never seen it with our FN or newer Colts! It makes me wonder if perhaps someone pulled a switcharoo on his fcg when he purchased it. It always looked to me like the trigger and hammer surfaces were worn unevenly. One end looked rounded off. Hope that helps

If still in warranty, I would return it. THis isn’t a good space to be in, given the current climate, he will be a target for ABC,DEF, whatever agency.

YOu might want to change FCG and see what happens. In a private area.

If its not in warranty then he’s going to have to fix it himself. Make sure the trigger group is assembled correctly. If all is well, then its most likely a worn or out of spec hammer or trigger. Since it fires after the release of the trigger, it seems the disconnector is working fine.

It’s no longer under warranty and I don’t think anyone is going to worry or be paranoid about it. It’s obvious he bought a legal semi auto and its also obvious he hadn’t intentionally modified any part of it. Just looking for some thoughts from the forum on this. I know I’ve read about this problem before but I cannot recall which forum it was discussed on. I know someone here has addressed this issue before.

Mine did that with a daniel defense lower parts kit.

I replaced the disconnector, and the problem went away.

I had posted this in a different thread about DPMS LPKS.

X 2 on the disconector

Firing upon release?

I echo the disconnector as the culprit. Seen it on AK’s with bad disco’s as well.

I’ve had this problem before, was able bad disconnector

def sounds like a disconnector issue , if the fcg was taken apart for cleaning check that the disconnector spring is not on upside down.

Disconnector… but if it’s under warranty, let them worry about it.

When the trigger is pulled, the sear on the trigger releases the hammer, the hammer is reset by the bolt carrier. As the hammer resets the disconnector holds the hammer until the trigger is released. When the the trigger is released the hammer is held in battery by the trigger sear. So if your rifle fires a second round after the release then the disconnector has functioned as designed and the trigger and hammer sear surfaces would be suspect, also check for loose and worn pins or holes.

Make sure the trigger and hammer pins are fully engaged in both sides of the receiver. I saw a Colt with a low round count do the same thing at work. The J spring inside the hammer was broken, which allowed the pin to walk to the left far enough to cause this problem. I replaced the hammer and the rifle functioned properly.

If the pins are in the proper place, check the engagement surfaces of the trigger and hammer as stated above. If the rifle has some wear on it, I recommend replacing the trigger, hammer, disconnector and applicable springs. You don’t want to scrimp on FCG parts.

For Pete’s sake, instead of wondering WTF happened to my fire control group, send an email to Colt describing what is going on and ask them what to do, regardless of under warranty or not. Send it in and get it done right from the manufacturer.

Disconnector and trigger pins discussed

inspect lower- I have had this issue when a blown primer gets caught in the trigger mechanism

Defective FCG parts. It happens. I’ve had it happen. Replace the hammer and trigger and it’ll likely go away.

Inspect the fcg. If all looks normal, check the disconnector by pulling the trigger, hold it back, re-cock the hammer as if firing, then very very very slowly release the trigger. If the disconnector is at fault the hammer will not be held back long enough for the sear surfaces to catch before the disconnector releases the hammer. This can be caused by the disconnector itself (usually) or the corresponding surface on the back side of the hammer that it hooks on. If it fails the test a new high quality disconnector will usually correct the problem. If you are not comfortable checking this yourself take it to a competent AR gunsmith.

Caution: If you have the upper and lower separated DO NOT LET THE HAMMER HIT THE RECEIVER OR BOLT CATCH!!! when doing this test.
