Has anyone used this cartridge for deer hunting, if so what are your thoughts?
I saw a review (w/photos) of an elk cleanly harvested with a 6.8. However, it was mentioned that 200m was it’s envelope for such persuits. I would think it could take down a deer cleanly if the shooter kept their own limitations and that of the round in mind.
I have been killing caribou for the past 4 years with a 6.5 Grendel. Furthest shot lazered at 273 with a 1 shot kill-big bull…as a matter of fact all my bou kills have been put down with one 6.5 grendel bullet each.
Not to mention the moose my buddy killed with his 6.5 Grendel this year.
Some say the 6.8 is better at killing…I doubt that… but I would venture to say it ain’t any worse inside 200 yd.![]()
223 has worked for me. I’d think that 6.8 would be gravy. Most deer are smaller than the people you might shoot. If you wouldn’t trust it for deer, I wouldn’t trust it for people.
If 308 is good for deer and 30-30 is good for deer, 6.8 should be good for deer.
Personally, I use a 12 gage shotgun with a Barnes expander. Every deer that I have shot with it have died in 4 leaps or less. One deer dropped in under 2 seconds. A shotgun is a killing machine. I might even use it when I go elk hunting. I don’t think much can withstand a 1 ounce hollow point sabot. The only down side of a shotgun is anything beyond 140 yards.
I’ve been fortunate to take around 12 deer with a 6.8spc. It’s all about placement of the shot. It will take a deer without any problem. I’ve had 1-shot kills on all of the deer and they ran from 100yds to died in their tracks (breaking both front shoulders). Quick observations, the SSA 110gr. Pro-Hunter is excellent. Hornady BTHP is good but penetrates too much, while the TAP-BT doesn’t exit (by design). I’ve taken deer with all of these rounds. I’m hopeful Hornady will develop a great deer round for the 6.8spc.
